Gabe’s Bar Mitzvah: November 11, 2023
Photos by: Jonni & Indie Super
Back to one of my favourite venues, Congregation Habonim, working with one of my favourite photographs, my daughter, Indie. She joined me for this one, and it was like ‘take your kid to work day’, except Indie is an exceptional photographer. Gabe was very cool… as in, he looked very suave, but also cool due to winter a-coming on. We were in and out the synagogue for the morning family photos, but all being said, I am sure in hindsight the family was pretty happy to brave the cold, it was pretty cold. Moving on, Gabe was up for this morning mitzvah task. My second time with this family, and everything was in place.
Gabe is a confident, charming little dude, but he has grown up since our last adventure two years ago. We invited his sister and parents to experience the chilled air with us, and reluctantly they did (no choice offered by the photographers ;). Eventually we all amassed in the courtyard for some grandparents and extended family photos. Ceremony was amazing as always, and how can it not be, Rab-cantors Aviva and Noam at the helm, and the incredible Tom Belman on guitar. If you have not heard this beautiful trio harmonize, time to make friends with the parents of a 12 year old kid, and get invited to his or her mitzvah. Then you will get to head something really special. Gabe spoke well, read well, self deprecating, charismatic, and delivered as everyone knew he could. An amazing lunch followed, funny albeit short speeches from his friends, before it was time to sit down for a little poker/roulette, as that’s what the kids are doin’ these days. Indie and I were done with photography, and called it a wrap. Mazel Tov, guys. Way to go.
