Ben’s Bar Mitzvah: December 4, 2025

And here we have it, the first of my brother’s children to become a man, the bar mitzvah of Benjamin. I have known this kid since the minute he appeared on this planet, and look at him now. A bit taller than me, and he still kind of looks like I did when I was younger, me being the uncle and all… or at least that is what my very reliable memory insists.  My nephew’s bar mitzvah took place at the Family Shul last Thursday, a day that counted as chilly even by Toronto standards. The weather was moody and not especially welcoming, but we refused to let that get in the way of having a fantastic time. Photos of Ben were taken in the synagogue foyer because Toronto decided to deliver its usual winter charm, but we made the most of what we had. It turns out that when the people are wonderful, the backdrop can politely step aside, and everyone looked absolutely stunning.  We did our immediate family photos, and then my colleague Justine Apple took over because I, the proud uncle, wanted to appear in more than one or two of these memories. Once the photos were wrapped, we moved inside for a beautiful ceremony. The synagogue looked spectacular, greatly improved from the version I remember from years ago. Ben filled the room with pride and admiration, especially for all four grandparents who were beaming from their seats.  After the ceremony we made our way to a delicious brunch, enjoyed a couple of heartfelt speeches, watched Ben’s friends hang out and have a blast, and took in the fact that this boy was now officially a man. Mazal Tov, guys, see you next Friday night.
