A Mitzvah is a lot of things packed into one pretty extraordinary day. The quiet stuff. The family stuff. The beautiful stuff. And eventually, the completely ridiculous stuff.
Here are five good places to start.
REHEARSAL
A LITTLE TIME BEFORE THE BIG DAY.
The rehearsal gives us time to slow things down. We can photograph the Mitzvah kid, the family and those beautiful moments with the Torah without the time pressure of the actual ceremony.
Quiet, relaxed and often some of my favourite photographs.
PORTRAITS
THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE DAY.
The kids. The family. The grandparents. Sometimes the dog.
A little direction when we need it and plenty of room for everybody to relax, have some fun and just be themselves.
CEREMONY
THIS IS THE REAL THING.
The Torah. The family. The nerves. The pride. And a thirteen year old suddenly running the show.
I stay close enough to catch everything and far enough away to let it happen.
DETAILS
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS.
The flowers. The centrepieces. The sweet table before everyone attacks it.
You spent months thinking about this stuff. I make sure it doesn’t disappear without being photographed.
PARTY
AND THEN THINGS GET RIDICULOUS.
Wild or mild. Hora, speeches, dancing, candle lighting, schmoozing and general silliness.
This is where I stop trying to control anything and go looking for the good stuff.
