HOW THIS ALL STARTED

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE.

I started playing seriously with photography in the late 90s, but when my daughter was born in 2006, something changed.

Photographs became pieces of time. Moments I could keep.

So, naturally, I became completely obsessed.

I dove into documentary, lighting, composition and pretty much anything else I could get my hands on. In 2010, I opened Jonni Super Photography and somehow turned something I loved doing into something I get to do for a living.

After years of weddings, families, musicians, headshots and a whole lot of Mitzvahs, what I’m looking for still hasn’t changed.

I want the photograph that feels like something.

HOW I WORK

THE EXPERIENCE MATTERS TOO.

I’ve photographed enough Mitzvahs to know that nobody wants to spend the entire day posing for pictures.

So I don’t work that way.

When it’s time for family photos, I’ll take charge, tell people where to stand, keep everybody moving and hopefully make the whole exercise considerably less painful than expected.

Then I back off.

Once the day starts happening, I want it to happen. Sometimes I’ll tell you exactly where to stand. Sometimes I’ll disappear into the background. Sometimes I’ll encourage completely inappropriate behaviour.

And sometimes the best thing I can do is shut up and press the shutter.

Knowing the difference is a pretty big part of the job.

WHEN I’M NOT HOLDING A CAMERA

BEING JONNI.

I’ve always been curious. I was the kid who went to the library and came home with 20 books about 20 completely different things. Apparently I haven’t changed much.

I’m a husband to Hilary, and dad to three pretty terrific kids, Marley, Indie and Jude, with Stevie, our excessively furry doodle, rounding out the crew. They’ve been willing photography subjects, unwilling photography subjects, assistants and critics.

When I’m not working, there’s a pretty good chance I’m moving. I ride my bike a lot, usually fast. In winter I teach snowboarding. Throw in summer canoeing, kayaking, camping, climbing, and travelling and I’m generally happiest when there’s an adventure involved.

And then there’s music. I play guitar or bass every day and have spent a considerable chunk of my life absorbing jazz and blues.

Apparently my very old website thought prospective clients needed to know that I can walk on stilts and throw a boomerang.

It’s survived this long, I’m leaving it in.
