Penny’s Bat Mitzvah: February 28, 2026 My adventures with Penny at Beth Tzedec this past weekend were fantastic. Her bat mitzvah had arrived and we were there to celebrate properly.  We kicked things off with a Friday afternoon rehearsal that took care of all the immediate and extended family photos. A very efficient start to the festivities. I stole Penny for a little wander outside the synagogue, brought her sister into the mix, and slowly added parents and extended family like we were building the perfect recipe.  Once we wrapped that up, we headed into the sanctuary for some beautiful photos with the Torah. Quiet, meaningful, and full of “this is really happening” energy. All of it setting the stage for the big day.  Fast forward to Saturday night and the havdalah service; candles lit, spices passed, smiles everywhere, young Penny officially ushered into adulthood surrounded by her friends and family.  And then, of course, it was time to party, and we all know who runs the best game in town.  Tiffany and Jesse from Bounce Entertainment brought her their game and it was on. Great food, warm and heartfelt speeches, and a dance floor that did not quit.  Mazel Tov, guys. Way to go. […]

Ezra’s Home Bar Mitzvah: February 19, 2026 This was such a fantastic little ‘backyard’ bar mitzvah at Ezra’s grandparents’ house. A beautiful, warm home filled with immediate family, a few extended relatives, and a close friend or two, the perfect setting to usher this young man into adulthood.  Middle of winter in Toronto, so naturally everything was indoors (because… snow). I arrived on site and started by wandering around with Ezra, grabbing some portraits before bringing in the immediate family, then the extended crew. We did a quick Torah rehearsal and then, boom, into the main event.  Moshe Saadon was on deck to officiate and, as usual, delivered a stellar job. Candy flew, schmoozing commenced, a spirited hora broke out for good measure, and we all sat down to a delicious Toben-style lunch.  Mazal Tov, guys. Great job.   The Story of Ezra’s Bar Mitzvah: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Nathan’s Bar Mitzvah: February 7, 2026 Photography by Isaiah Nathan’s bar mitzvah took place at the beautiful Boulevard Room on Steeles. A stellar location that lends itself to a wonderful ceremony and party. Nathan was ready in full mitzvah regalia for photos. Very quick zip outside for a few pics but generally everything was back in the Boulevard. Once family portraits were done, it was time for a ceremony. Moshe Saadon was on deck to usher this young man into adulthood. Nathan spoke well and delivered his parsha with confidence and pride. Formalities over, it was time to party; hora, delicious food, speeches, limbo, the usual balagan of the bar mitzvah circuit. Way to go Nathan, good job.   All the Photos: HERE

Liam’s Bar Mitzvah: February 7, 2026 Liam’s bar mitzvah was a three part event. A little rehearsal, a little post lunch gathering, and a wicked party at the eZone in Etobicoke. Let’s start at the beginning. I met Liam and his family at Holy Blossom on a chilly February day. Most of our photos happened indoors because that is where the heat was and the sun was not doing much of its job outside. We made our way through Holy Blossom, first floor, second floor, third floor, stopping wherever the light worked. I love this synagogue and it is always a good time shooting there.  We grabbed photos with parents and grandparents before heading into the sanctuary for pictures with the Torah. A strong way to begin the day.  Fast forward to lunch, and my colleague Justine Apple was on hand to capture everything food and speech related. The toasts, the smiles, the music, the good things to eat; exactly what you want after a beautiful ceremony.  A couple of hours later I met the family again at the eZone in Etobicoke, partial chaos in the best way possible, ie; lot’s of running around. Whirlyball, laser tag, basketball, soccer, arcade games, ping pong, […]

Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah: January 22, 2026 My second time around with this wonderful family, and as expected it was a joyful day. Ryan’s bar mitzvah at Adath Israel was full of heart from start to finish. Toronto had been buried in snow for days, which limited our outdoor photo adventure, but it didn’t stop us entirely. Ryan and I snuck out for a short walk to catch some sunshine photography, family joined in, and then the weather politely sent us back inside just in time for the ceremony.  This synagogue truly lends itself to photography, and it delivered once again. Ryan was fantastic. He read from the Torah beautifully and made everyone proud. Candy flew, hugs followed, and suddenly it was time for breakfast. The food deserves its own paragraph in the history books.  Ryan and his friends quickly took over the games and went full throttle. Speeches followed, warm and thoughtful from friends and parents, then Ryan did too. Two mitzvahs down, one to go. Mazel Tov guys. Norah’s Bat Mitzvah: January 17, 2026 This was a fantastic Bat Mitzvah to kick off the year. I met Norah at her house for some pre mitzvah photos before heading to the ceremony and party. Norah’s dogs greeted me with equal parts curiosity and suspicion, but once I offered my hand and made it through the door, the guard was mostly down. I photographed Norah at the family home, a beautiful wide open white space that made for lovely photos. Add a sister, parents, a couple of dogs, and the first photo session was wrapped.  We then headed to The Factory where Cantor David Cooper was waiting and preparing for the ceremony. The space looked fantastic, everything perfectly set for such a special celebration. Even though Norah was feeling a little under the weather, she put on a brave face and performed beautifully for everyone in attendance.  After the candy throwing and the Torah being put away, it was off to the races. Magen Boys absolutely nailed this party. Slinky on the mic, Monaco holding down the tunes, just a great team for the first party of 2026. The food was delicious, the snacks were irresistible, the speeches were warm, and everyone […]

Dylan’s Bar Mitzvah: January 8, 2026 That was a wonderful two days spent with the delightful Dylan as he stepped into adulthood. We began with a rehearsal on Wednesday, followed by the ceremony on Thursday, which felt like the perfect amount of time and space to usher this young man into this milestone. The rehearsal was easy and stress free. While the snow outside Adath Israel limited us slightly, it did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm or our commitment to making beautiful images. I took a short walk with Dylan, then with his sister, followed by immediate family, and finished with the extended family gathered in the foyer. After photographing Dylan with the Torah, we wrapped up and prepared for the main event the next day. I met the family again for the ceremony, and it was truly spectacular. Dylan was calm and confident. He spoke beautifully and made everyone incredibly proud. The day was perfectly capped off with a delicious brunch brought. Avery’s Bat Mitzvah: January 10, 2026 Well that was one fantastic Bat Mitzvah at Temple Sinai. It had been many years since I last saw this family when I photographed her sister way before Covid, so it felt especially meaningful to spend some time together again and capture this wonderful young woman. We stepped outside for twilight photos as this was an evening celebration, grabbed some beautiful Torah images before the ceremony began, and then it turned into a full on party for the rest of the night. Tiffany from Bounce Entertainment held down the fort brilliantly as she always does. The food was delicious, the energy in the room was electric, and the speeches were genuinely heartwarming. Everything you could want in a Bat Mitzvah celebration was there… and Avery was spectacular. Such a delightful young woman, and such a joy to photograph. Mazel Tov guys. Ben’s Bar Mitzvah: December 4, 2025 And here we have it, the first of my brother’s children to become a man, the bar mitzvah of Benjamin. I have known this kid since the minute he appeared on this planet, and look at him now. A bit taller than me, and he still kind of looks like I did when I was younger, me being the uncle and all… or at least that is what my very reliable memory insists.  My nephew’s bar mitzvah took place at the Family Shul last Thursday, a day that counted as chilly even by Toronto standards. The weather was moody and not especially welcoming, but we refused to let that get in the way of having a fantastic time. Photos of Ben were taken in the synagogue foyer because Toronto decided to deliver its usual winter charm, but we made the most of what we had. It turns out that when the people are wonderful, the backdrop can politely step aside, and everyone looked absolutely stunning.  We did our immediate family photos, and then my colleague Justine Apple took over because I, the proud uncle, wanted to appear in more than one or two of […]

Robert’s Bar Mitzvah: November 29, 2025 My last adventure with this family was always going to be special. We had to wrap up the last of these three boys in a tidy little photography bouquet because the next time I do this will probably be their weddings and that is a long way off. I met with them three times, once for a family shoot in Cedarvale Park, once for a rehearsal at Beit Rayim, and finally for the post ceremony dinner downtown at the Royal York Hotel. Each time brought us closer to our goal which was a collection of beautiful photos marking this family’s third child coming of age. And he did just that this past weekend. Robert is a bit of a joker, something I should have noticed years ago when I photographed his brothers, but this time he was the star so the joker finally took centre stage. Each of these adventures with the family was fun, they all nailed their parts because by now they are seasoned pros, and the whole experience was a delight. Mazal Tov guys, the last of the three boys has officially become a man. Way to go.   The Story […]

Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah: November 29, 2025 Back at my favourite congregation Habonim, one of the places I love most to photograph. It has been a great year and Ryan’s bar mitzvah, one of my last of the season, was just perfect. The day was cold, I won’t deny it, but not cold enough to stop us from stepping into the crisp Saturday morning air of Toronto. Ryan and I went for a little walk and since this was my last one at this synagogue for the year, we were not going to deprive ourselves. I grabbed some great shots of him before recruiting his sister to help keep the photo adventure rolling. Then parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles, aunts, the whole crew until everyone was photographed and we could finally head inside. Rabbi Audrey and Cantor Kim were already getting things moving. This kid was good. Ryan knew his stuff and spoke beautifully from the Torah which made everyone proud. We wrapped up the ceremony with candy, challah, and wine before drifting into the foyer for a bit of schmoozing while the room turned over. Then back inside for speeches, a delicious breakfast, and some fun and games before calling it […]

Holly’s Bat Mitzvah: November 22, 2025 This was a really special night with a truly lovely family. A couple of years ago I photographed Holly’s sister on Queen Street and we had an absolute blast. So when I realized we were back in my neighbourhood doing it all again I was basically ecstatic. It was a chilly fall evening which kept our photography adventure on the shorter side, but honestly it worked perfectly. Our home base was Fat Pasha on Dupont where both the ceremony and dinner were happening. Holly and I stayed close and wandered the familiar urban corners I love, this is my neighbourhood after all. We hit alleyways and brick walls and graffiti and staircases and anything else we could find. Every spot worked like a charm. I pulled Holly’s sister in for a little déjà vu moment and the parents jumped in too. We even squeezed in the extended family as the sun dipped away. Once we wrapped we headed back inside where Fran Sharpe stepped up to lead a beautiful Havdallah service for Holly. When the ceremonial part was done it was time to settle in for a classic Fat Pasha feast. Amazing food, a […]

Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: November 20, 2025 It has been many months since I have made my way to Beth Tzedec for any mitzvah of any kind, so it felt fantastic to be back again near the end of the mitzvah season. I met Rachel and the family and right away there was an immediate foreshadowing that this was going to be a fantastically goofy rehearsal photo shoot. Rachel delivered in every possible way. She is such a lovely quirky charismatic kid and we had the best time wandering around outside while snapping away. The pictures do not lie, just a lot of laughs and plenty of silliness.  I then took her sister outside and the playful laughter kept rolling. The parents were next and one could immediately see that the apples do not fall far from the tree. By the time we wrapped up it was getting dark so we headed inside where the extended family were waiting patiently for their moment in the limelight.  Finally Rachel and I slipped into the small sanctuary for some photos with the Torah and also just to catch a breath away from the crowd. Mazal Tov guys, what a fantastic evening.   […]

Sorelle’s Bat Mitzvah: November 15, 2025 For the third and final time I met this family at Congregation Habonim for a milestone that officially brings all their children into the world of Jewish adulthood.  A little history is in order. Both of Sorelle’s older siblings are good friends with my kids, same age but absolutely not the same height.  Sorelle and I took a stroll around the synagogue. The temperature had dropped and things were leaning toward the chilly side, but the cold was not going to stop us from getting great photographs of this beautiful young woman. Add a couple of siblings and a couple of parents and suddenly I felt like a Hobbit who had wandered out of the Shire.  We kept the photography adventure going with the temperature still close to zero, though we knew the inside of the synagogue was warm and comfortable. After some extended family photos we decided that fall weather had done enough and we stepped indoors to celebrate.  Sorelle spoke beautifully. I overheard a moment between the her and the Rabbi, and the Rabbi mentioned that Sorelle was an exceptional young woman and truly a head above the crowd, which felt very accurate.  Ceremony complete, […]

Eden’s Bat Mitzvah: November 15, 2025 This was one of those cold rainy Toronto days as winter approaches, and I was heading up to Eden’s bat mitzvah at the Village Loft. You remember when it snowed last week? Well today the winter rain decided to make an appearance just to remind everyone who is in charge. We all know who is in charge outside, but we had no intention of being outside. We were inside where Eden was the real boss, and she embraced the role with ease. We went on a little photo adventure around the Village Loft where the weather stayed politely on the other side of the balcony. Add some siblings and some parents and soon we had wrapped up the immediate family portraits. Then it was back into the warmth and glow of the Loft.  Aviva Rajski was ready to guide this wonderful young woman into adulthood. As always she sang beautifully I need by master guitarist, Josh Engel. We stayed warm and cosy through the entire celebration. Delicious food and heartfelt speeches set the tone and Justin of the jbxperience kept the party running with style.  Way to go Eden. Mazel tov.   The Story of Eden’s […]

Jack’s Bar Mitzvah: November 8, 2025 Jack is one of those kids I have known since birth, his birth, not mine. He is the son of my sister in law’s brother, so this one was a full family thrice-removed affair. It also happened to take place at one of my favourite venues, Album Studio, the same spot my own son used for his bar mitzvah two years ago. (I love this space. If anyone ever wants details, I am your guy.)  Back to Jack, we started outside with Jack and my camera. The day was sunny, not too warm, not too cool, just right, almost suspiciously perfect. Once I was done with Jack, I gathered the rest of the crew for portraits. Album has a beautiful little alcove that delivers every single time, especially in Fall. That gave us our family and extended family photo extravaganza before the ceremony.  Ben Silverberg was there to usher Jack into adulthood, and he did not disappoint. Max’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: November 3, 2025 Max’s bar mitzvah rehearsal was just delightful. We headed up to Shepherd where the Darchei Noam is located. It is on a busy suburban street, but we still managed to squeeze in a few classic shots before the rain chased us away. There was a little walkabout, a little hiding under eaves troughs, and at one point we ducked into a parking garage, we succeeded. Excellent times.  Eventually we made our way upstairs into the sanctuary for some photos with the Torah. I adore the ceiling in this synagogue, it always puts on a show. A few family photos later and we wrapped up the rehearsal before the main event. We still have one more photo shoot in the park in Spring once the weather behaves. I photographed his brother a while back, so seeing everyone a little taller but otherwise exactly the same made me smile. You know the feeling.  We met at the house for pre-ceremony photos, and the fall leaves were showing off everywhere, because Toronto in autumn rarely misses. Around the neighbourhood, we very easily captured some beautiful fall pictures.  We wrapped up the immediate family and grandparents before heading to Beth David for Saturday Havdallah.  This was a three part event, so once that wrapped, we headed to Paese Restaurant for dinner, games, short speeches, and a warm family gathering. Hannah’s Bat Mitzvah: October 25, 2025 I met Hannah and her family at Holy Blossom, which turned out to be the first of two very special days with this delightful crew. Hannah was spectacular. We kicked off the rehearsal with a little adventure around Holy Blossom. Now, to be clear, this might just be my favourite place in Toronto to photograph a Mitzvah. There’s so much variety, those huge bright windows streaming in light, the sweeping stairs, the pillars, the corridors, the cozy corners and grand open spaces. It’s a photographer’s dream, and of course, we were going to make the most of it. Hannah and I wandered around with plenty of enthusiasm, soaking up every bit of that magic light. We started indoors, then stepped outside, and eventually brought in the rest of the family. Mom, dad, and little brother joined in for the fun, and before long we were down in the sanctuary for the classic Torah photos. Once those were done, we wrapped up outside by recreating her parents’ wedding photos on the steps of Holy Blossom.  So nostalgic, a full-circle moment and a perfect finish. Lucas’s Bar Mitzvah: October 24, 2025 I was back at Morton’s Steakhouse on University for another mitzvah dinner. I’ve been here before, and my memory served me well, it’s dark, really dark, but only the lighting. The vibe was bright and buzzing, because Lucas’s family was there to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah. This dinner followed the morning ceremony. Lucas and I took a quick walk outside as the sun slid down and the city started to unwind. We grabbed a few photos in and around Morton’s, then brought in the rest of the family for portraits across the street and down the block. We moved fast and managed to squeeze in the extended family shots just before the sun vanished completely. Once the photos were wrapped, it was time to head inside for some schmoozing, mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres, blessings over the challah, a few heartfelt speeches, and finally, a proper Morton’s feast. Max’s Bar Mitzvah: October 19, 2025 Max’s Bar Mitzvah was back at one of my favourite and always-anticipated spots, the Richmond Hill Golf and Country Club. I love this venue, especially when the sun is shining, the air is crisp, and fall is showing off. Lucky for us, that’s exactly how the day played out.  I grabbed a few shots of Max outside while we waited for our courtesy golf cart to whisk us down into the meadow. The first set was our “urban” series, brick walls, big smiles, and the whole immediate family. Once we hit the meadow, things turned “rustic.” We got the best of both worlds, with plenty of walking, chatting, joking, and those easy, playful moments that make the best photos.  After wrapping the meadow shots, we headed back up for the extended family and cousin portraits. The balcony at Richmond Hill Golf and Country Club never disappoints, it’s one of those views I could photograph forever.  Then it was time to get serious; ceremony time. Jordana & Will’s B’nei Mitzvah: October 19, 2025 This was one wild and crazy B’nei Mitzvah celebration for the twins, Jordana and Will.  Ben Silverberg was on deck to guide this dynamic duo into adulthood. Rain was in the forecast, so we were in full hustle mode, but the gods were clearly on our side. We managed to wrap everything just in time before heading inside for grandparents and extended family shots. With photos done, it was time for these kids to get serious and officially become adults in the eyes of Jewish law. Ben runs a tight ship, and this ceremony was no exception. Tucked away in a cozy corner of the restaurant, Jordana and Will spoke beautifully, making everyone proud. Nate’s Bar Mitzvah: October 23, 2025 Well, here I am, back at Congregation Habonim for Nate’s Bar Mitzvah. A crisp fall day in Toronto, the kind where the leaves are turning, the air bites just a little, and it’s still dark when you wake up… but it’s a bright and celebratory day for young Nate.  Not too chilly this time, which was a pleasant surprise; in past years I’ve been bundled up like I’m shooting in the Arctic, but today was perfectly manageable.  We met at the synagogue and got right into portraits in and around Habonim.  I started with Nate, then brought in the rest of the family, and finally we gathered the extended family; grandparents, and cousins in the alcove out back before the ceremony began. Nate was fantastic, he read from the Torah beautifully and sang more of the service than I usually hear.  Quite the proud moment, I must say.  A fantastic lunch followed, apparently Nate’s dad knows someone who knows someone who knows someone, and they really delivered.
