Joshua Bar Mitzvah: April 29, 2023 Photographed by: Justine Josh’s Bar Mitzvah took place on a rainy spring morning at Congregation Habonim. Everyone arrived bright and early, very excited for the celebration ahead.  I started off with Josh and his older sister in the shul reception area. Josh looked pretty sharp in that blue suit, and both kids were a pleasure to work with.  We hit the ground running, and added Josh’s parents and grandparents. Following portraits, guests began arriving for the ceremony. Rabbi Katz and Cantor Aviva graciously welcomed everyone and congratulated Josh on his special day. He did a stellar job reading his parsha and he gave a moving D’var Torah that made his family so proud.  Post ceremony, everyone schmoozed in the reception area. When the tables were set up, guests moved into the hall for lunch. There was a delicious spread of bagels, lox, cream cheese, salads, and dessert. Everyone had a great time eating, chatting, and celebrating the Bar Mitzvah boy.  Mazal Tov guys, on a beautiful simcha. Zach’s Bar Mitzvah: April 22, 2023 Zach’s bar mitzvah was a three event affair.  What started out as a rehearsal eventually ended at a wild lunch party.  In-between, we met at a grandparents condo for some family photos.  Zach was in good spirits throughout the whole ordeal. Let’s start at the beginning; I met everyone at Temple Sinai for a rehearsal.  This time of year, the garden is just starting to bloom, and we were good to go. The sibs were all in too. We photographed some traditional torah photos before calling it quits, looking forward to the next adventure.  That was to be extended family photos in a condo, just gathering the whole gang together before dinner was the order of the day. And finally we met up again after the ceremony at Temple Sinai, it was party time.  A delicious brunch, warm speeches, and all around fun and games. Mazel tov, guys.   The Story of Zach’s Bar Mitzvah: Selected Photos HERE All the Photos: HERE

Cooper’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: April 27, 2023 So my second time around with this family was fantastic, we met up at Temple Sinai for some outdoor family photos before heading inside to take pictures with the Torah. You have to love the garden at Temple Sinai, so easy to work with.  Cooper was fantastic, it didn’t hurt that the day was spectacular and we took full advantage of the late afternoon sun. Cooper and his sister have a special relationship and that was not lost on the camera. Once inside, we got down to business, photos with the Torah and some of the beautiful stained glass, before wrapping up with the whole family outside once again. Mazel tov guys, way to go.   The Story of Cooper’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: Selected Photos HERE All the Photos: HERE

Layla’s Bat Mitzvah: April 4, 2023 Layla’s bat mitzvah was a beautiful two part affair. We started off at Beth Emeth with a rehearsal a few days prior before wrapping things up with a fantastic party. Layla was in fine form for this adventure, this being in my second time around with the family, and everyone knew exactly what to do. Rehearsal: we took some photos inside with the Torah, and the beautiful stained glass before heading outside into the Spring weather. Once the rehearsal wrapped, we waited a few days before rocking an amazing party at the refurbished Avenue Banquet Hall. This place has had a major facelift and it is fantastic. Some family photos outside, some family photos inside, and then just a rock out like there was no tomorrow. Bounce took hold of this party and did not let go, while Heidi Gruenspan brought the night together beautifully.  Such an amazing time, Mazel Tov!!!   The Story of Layla’s Bat Mitzvah: Selected Photos HERE All the Photos: HERE

Libby was good to go from the start, we took some photos with the Torah before finding some magical silhouettes against the stained glass. Then everybody joined in on the bima and against the brick wall to wrap up the inside photos.  We stepped out into the beautiful spring sunshine where the family had some fun.  Libby, way to go, you are ready for the big day, mazel tov, guys.   The Story of Libby’s Bat Mitzvah: Selected Photos HERE All the Photos: HERE

Nolan’s Bar Mitzvah: March 13, 2023 Photographed by: Justine Nolan’s bar mitzvah started out on a chilly winter morning at the Pickle Barrel in Markham. He arrived looking very dapper in his mitzvah suit and tie. This course did match the decor inside that would be donated to Ve’ahavta. We decided to photograph mainly in the mall with some pictures of extended family and grandparents being taken outside due to the temperature. After portraits were taken, everyone moved inside for the service officiated by Moshe Sa’adon. Service was beautiful with heartfelt speeches. Finally the service wrapped up and it was time for a hora, delicious lunch, schmoozing, and a few more shots of the friends and family. Leo’s Bar Mitzvah: February 22, 2023 This was a lovely bar mitzvah at Shaarei Shomayim for Leo’s bar mitzvah. The usual gang of siblings, cousins, friends and relatives were all accounted for. We jumped right in with the laying of tefillin before diving into the morning ceremony. Leo was on form, read beautifully from the torah and made everyone proud.  Lots of dancing, singing, candy was a flying, the whole enchilada. We wrapped up the ceremony and settled into a delicious brunch in the hall. We had to get some photos of ‘the boys‘ due to Leo’s being the last bar mitzvah of this group of guys. Maya’s Bat Mitzvah: February 18, 2023 Maya’s mitzvah party took place at the Arbat Restaurant in Thornhill.  Maya and family were good to go for some late afternoon outdoor shots.  I little cold, mind you, in contrast to the ‘hot’ party about to commence inside. We did our little photoshoot before adding in all extended members of the family.  Party Crew were on deck to make this night happen, and they did a fantastic job.  We limbo’ed, jumped rope, tossed beanbags, held kids aloft in chairs, that kind of party stuff.  There were impromptu dance moves, speeches, much laughter and mirth, just a fun party.. with tons of food.  Mazel tov, guys, can’t wait until the next one.   Story of Maya’s Bat Party Mitzvah: Selected Photos HERE All the Photos: HERE

Charlie, Alice, & Molly’s Tri-Mitzvah: February 11, 2023 This was the perfect opportunity to photograph my son’s friend Charlie, and his two first cousins Alice and Molly, and my first tri-mitzvah in quite a few months would not disappoint. All three families met individually at the Gardiner Museum for what would become an epic ceremony and party. I took the three kids out for some solo photography time, added in their respective siblings and finally the parents. The sun was setting low, and a cool chill was in the air, but we did not mind. Once that wrapped, we added some grandparents for good measure before settling down to a beautiful and warm ceremony. Rabbi Ilyse and Rabbi Cantor Aviva from Congregation Habonim were on deck to facilitate a fantastic ceremony accompanied beautifully on the guitar by Tom Bellman. Everything went perfectly and according to plan. The ceremony ended and we headed down to the first floor for some schmoozing and appetizers. Meanwhile upstairs, Bounce Entertainment was getting ready to drop the needle. Jarred was on the mic while Tiffany was spinning discs. (You know they don’t actually spin discs anymore, right?… that’s called an anachronism). A delicious dinner interspersed […]

Austen’s Bar Mitzvah: January 28, 2023 Photos by: Jonni & Justine My third time around with this family, and this was going to be the last celebration for a while. Austen of course, had benefited from two earlier siblings mitzvahs, so he knew exactly what to expect. I met this family at Holy Blossom, which is always inviting, bright, and gives me many photographic opportunities. I took Austen for a quick walk outside, being winter and all, before heading into the foyer to finish things up. We added some siblings, some parents, and some grandparents, before going into the sanctuary to take photographs with the Torah. I wrapped up my rehearsal, and Justine took over for the post ceremony lunch. Fast-forward to Saturday lunch, and Austen looked very dapper in that blue Mitzvah suit.  The family had chosen a beautiful blue and white décor with a ski theme in the newly renovated room downstairs for the post-ceremony luncheon.  When the guests arrived, some candid shots of Austen with his friends and cousins in the foyer was the order of the day.  Lots of schmoozing with mimosas and tasty appetizers, before everyone moved into the main hall for a lively hora […]

Jonah’s Mitzvah Rehearsal & Family Photoshoot: Oct 23, 2022 / Jan 12, 2023 This was a two part event separated by a New Years Eve party; the first part taking place in a park, and the second, at the synagogue. I don’t think we could have asked for a more spectacular weekend for this photo session, Jonah’s parents were smart when choosing this date many months ago, they must’ve been clairvoyant because this could’ve been a mess. But on the contrary, it was spectacular. I took Jonah for a little stroll around the Alexander Muir Park before adding siblings and parents. Finally grandparents and cousins showed up and we were all good to go. There’s nothing like the park in the fall, and this fall of 2022 seem to be more spectacular than most. We had a great time before wrapping up, now we wait until the ceremony in January. Once again, Jonah‘s parents were clairvoyant to know that this park would not be an acceptable photo location in January, these guys know their stuff. Way to go guys. So fast-forward to January, and we find ourselves at Petah Tikva Synagogue in Toronto for a lovely family rehearsal.  Jonah was […]

Ruby’s Bat Mitzvah: December 10, 2022 Photographed by: Justine, Jonni, & Jude So this was my niece’s bat mitzvah, the last one of this family.  We had a party for the first, COVID the second, and back to a party for this one.  Just a night of fun smiling faces.  I took Ruby out into the cold fall evening for some photo fun. We added in a sibling or two, then two parents, and ended up with a lovely dish of in-laws, nieces, and a nephew; let’s call it family.  Then the big family joined in and I had to give up my camera, Justine took over. Family photos done, we headed into the inner sanctum of York Mills Gallery for the ceremony (got my camera back again… haha). The ceremony was lovely, kind words, warmth and love abounding.  Ruby was great. Some after ceremony schmoozing had to be on the menu until it was time to head into the party room where Sole Power was waiting to bring the house down. It’s nice to be on the other side of the camera once in a while, so I was one the party goers having a blast… we all did.  […]

Jana’s Bat Mitzvah: December 3, 2022 This was the first event I have ever photographed at the JCC north on Bathurst north of Sheppard, and it’s is a lovely venue for a bat mitzvah. I met Jenna and the family in the late afternoon and off we did go, wondering around the building looking for interesting places to photograph. The weather was not on our side, as ‘winter is coming’, but we managed. I added in a sister, parents, and grandparents, and we were done with family photos. Now it was just time for the ceremony.  Jana read from the torah beautifully and made everyone proud.  There was plenty of schmoozing to be had, and that started the evening with a bang. Once we were all back inside, Harlan from Superfly was holding court for this party. Jana and her friends were nonstop, it was dance the night away, and away they did dance. Jonathan’s Bar Mitzvah: November 26, 2022 Well this two-part event was a wonderful walk down memory lane, I photographed Jonathan’s sister about five years ago and we are now coming full circle. We did a lovely rehearsal session at the Beach Shul on Thursday, if you don’t remember, that was the really foggy day that you couldn’t see your head in front of your face, needless to say, outdoor pictures were hard to be done. We spent most of our time inside with the torah. Fast forward to Saturday evening, I met the family again at a much fog free Beach Shul for some family photographs, a little family fun, and then inside for the havdallah service. We wrapped up and headed for the family home where a truly delicious meal was being prepared. It was mainly a schmooze fest for a couple of hours, lovely speeches, delicious desserts, and this mitzvah was a wrap. Ruby’s Bat Mitzvah: November 5, 2022 Hi love photographing family friends, kids I have known since they were tiny. We met at the City Shul which is somewhat of a moving target these days, this time was located in the Grange Park near Queen and Beverly. This was really a lovely location for our rehearsal and subsequently, the ceremony on Saturday morning. This was also the week that the Toronto weather decided to go rogue on us so what was sunny and warm three days ago was now snowy and ridiculously cold. Faye was a trooper, she rushed in and out for a few minutes just to get some key photos. We did the same with the rest of the family before heading in for our rehearsal with Rabbi Elise Goldstein. Fast forward a few days and the party was fast approaching, this took place on Saturday night in Archeo Restaurant in the Distillery. I love this venue, we were unable to be outside due to the holiday festival and once again, the weather, but indoors was all party all night.
