Marley’s Bat Mitzvah: June 22, 2019

This was of course a special Bat Mitzvah, it was my eldest daughter Marley… finally coming of age.  We organized the whole thing ourselves with help from friends in the industry and Marley’s Zaidie, Jerry, who wrote and officiated the event… and the event was spectacular.  We took over the Archeo Restaurant in the Distillery District for the day.  Marley and I headed down early to meet my friend and photographer, Franc Natale (who came out of ‘retirement’ to photograph for us.. yes!!!).  I had my camera on hand for a bit, but had to put it away when I became the subject of the photos myself.  So… the family all wandered around the Distillery in the morning sun, using the many areas, corners, and spaces for photography.  The Distillery is probably one of the most interesting venues in the city.  The big family joined us for portraits, until we were 7 families in total; 14 kids, 12 adults, and 2 sets of grandparents.  Franc had planned to take off around then, and my colleague Rob Ackerman took up position behind the lens.  The ceremony finally underway; the sun shining, the guitar playing, everyone singing, people coming up lighting, Marley reciting, everything just came together splendidly under the watchful eye of Karen from 2-Steps Ahead Event Planning, who was on call with us for the day. It was truly a special and intimate ceremony, full of heartfelt warmth and kindness. Lunch in the Distillery is quite delicious, and this was no exception.  We ate and drank and laughed and cried, glasses and chairs were raised with vigour, speeches were spoken, more crying, Kenny Munshaw tickled (do they still use that phrase?) the ivories (are they actually ivory these days?) and sang up a storm. Steve from FunPhoto was on hand with the photo-booth, and Rob Fishbaum, aka Fish the Magish magically worked the room to everyone’s delight.  Mazel tov Marley, you really rose to the occasion, carried yourself with grace, spoke beautifully, charmed the crowd, just what I expected.  A most excellent time had by all.  Now we regroup and get ready for #2 in 2021. Indie, you’re up!!

Sam’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: June 12, 2019

My second time around with this gang, we had a family rehearsal at the Beth Emeth Synagogue on a beautiful spring day in Toronto.  Sam was good to go, some good solo pix outside before the rehearsal.  The family joined at the end, the perfect day. Beth Emeth is amazing for silhouettes, and today was no exception.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Gabriella’s Bat Mitzvah: June 15, 2019

Gabriella’s bat mitzvah was bringing a close the season, as summer camp was fast approaching.  It was a wonderful celebration in an amazing setting, for we were at the esteemed Sunnybrook Estates.  What a glorious place to hold an event.  Gabriella and I got a good sense of the land as we wandered around.  Then family started to arrive, so we added them in.  Eli Rubenstein of Habonim officiated the ceremony, while Bounce Entertainment held down the party front.  Gabriella was amazing, she rocked the ceremony, and then rocked the party.  Bounce brought along their ‘elastic guy’ who got everyone weirded out… in a good way.  The whole event was tied together so nicely by Bar Belopolski, party planner extraordinaire.  What a great evening, Mazel Tov guys!!

Mielle’s Bat Mitzvah: June 8, 2019

Nothing like a bat mitzvah party downtown Toronto, some urban landscape, yes!!! Mielle was ready to go, a party overlooking the city.  We started on the street, and then headed into the TIFF lightbox to LUMA restaurant for a stellar party.  Mielle was excited and eager.  Great food, warm friends, kind words, all the makings of a fine event.  Mazel Tov guys, way to go!!!

Riley’s Bat Mitzvah: June 9, 2019

Riley’s bat mitzvah rehearsal and party we’re just two wonderful days in June. The rehearsal took place at the Beth Torah, a fantastic synagogue to photograph in. The weather was spectacular so Riley and I started off outside, green, green, and more green to be used as a backdrop. We went inside for some torah time, the classic bat mitzvah photos. Riley was poised and graceful, looked fabulous and delivered. We finally wrapped it up with some family photos before heading home and resting a few days before the party… and what a party at was!  It took place at The Showroom, another fantastic venue in Toronto. (Ya gotta love the backlighting that one gets from the stage.)  We took some family photos outside against more lush green of the Toronto summer, before heading inside to party down. Keston of the Magen Boys was on hand and just went to all out for this affair, and Sharlene Wilder, planner extraordinaire tied everything together wonderfully.  A great time was had by all.  Mazel Tov, guys!!!

Myles’ Bar Mitzvah: June 6, 2019

I had a great time at Myles’ bar mitzvah.  The morning service was held Miles’ house, in a giant tent, with Moshe Saadan officiating. It’s always a lovely service and the weather cooperated beautifully.  Miles was great, and dutifully stepped up to the plate and became a ‘Jewish man’.  A lovely brunch followed followed by a one-day rest before the craziness of the Saturday party at Oakdale Golf & Country Club.  Sharlene Wilder held down the party planning duties, while the Magen Boys securely nailed down the party front… and what an affair it was.  I love photographing at Oakdale, the outside patio now redone and looking good.  Myles and I managed to steal away for a some solo shots before the festivities got underway, and underway they did get, the kids danced up quite a storm at this one, late late into the night.  Mazel Tov, guys!!!

Zac’s Backyard Bar Mitzvah: June 1, 2019

This was my second time around the block with this family, and I have been looking forward to Zac’s bar mitzvah for two years now. He was definitely on his game on mitzvah day. We walked around the garden while getting some cool Zac photos, before heading into the backyard for some family photos. Cantor Moshe Saadon officiated over the ceremony which was, as usual, very warm and special. It’s nice to have a bar mitzvah in one’s home, makes for a very cosy space for friends and family. Back to Zac, he read beautifully from the Torah and spoke well during his D’var Torah. Once the ceremony was over, we all settled into a delicious dinner in the backyard. What a fun way to spend the evening.  Mazel Tov!!

Gabrielle’s Bat Mitzvah: June 2, 2019

Watch an amazing way to spend a Sunday afternoon, The weather held and we had a fantastic party up at the Boulevard Room on Steeles. it was Gabrielle’s bat mitzvah. Gabrielle and I started our photo shoot outside before being joined by the rest of the family. After that, it was no holds barred Argentinian style, and these guys really know how to party. Gabrielle looked beautiful, she carried herself with style and grace.  The M.C. Paul from Pure Entertainment and raised the roof on this party. Fantastic time was had by all, mazel tov guys!!!

Josh’s Bar Mitzvah: June 1, 2019

Josh’s bar mitzvah took place on a beautiful afternoon at McLean House at the Sunnybrook Estates.  Josh and I wandered around in the gardens to get some photos before the family joined us. What a spectacular day, I guess the 2019 heavy spring rains were for something, and that something was lush green gardens, and lush they were.  We took photos of the family, both big and small, and then headed in for the ceremony let by Arlene Moshe.  She is always so inclusive and warm, and today was no exception.  Post ceremony, it was a wild horah and then delicious lunch.  Mazel Tov guys, what a great way to start the summer.

Brooke’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: May 26, 2019

Brooke’s bat mitzvah took place at Beth Torah Synagogue, one of the nicest places to photograph.  The rehearsal was held on a spectacular summer afternoon as was the ceremony, we could’ve asked for better weather. Brooke was fantastic, she is a confident and engaging mitzvah girl, poised to take on the world. Once the ceremony was over, we headed back to the family house for lunch and some family photos in their beautiful garden.  The food was excellent and the company was all ‘family’. Mazel Tov!

Zoey’s Bat Mitzvah: May 26, 2019

Zoey’s bat mitzvah was quite the affair. We started off at the family home with some photos of Zoey and her family, both inside and out, before heading off to the Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue. I love photographing here, the sun sets in the perfect position to guarantee beautiful backlit portraits. This event space also lends itself to a party. Megan Boys held court year all night with Justin at the helm. The party was tied together beautifully by Judy Stein, party planner extraordinaire. Kids and adults had a blast, there was no other way. Zoey entered on a surfboard held high above the crowd, and then everything just got crazier after that. Speeches were warm, food was delicious, and the night went long.  Mazel Tov!

Cami’s Bat Mitzvah: May 25, 2019

Cami’s bat mitzvah. This is one of those events where I was both photographer and guest, with my partner Ben filling in the rest. The ceremony was held at by the Shir Libeynu Congregation of Toronto on St. Claire.  Such a lovely service, with music, poetry, and beautiful words. These are family friends so my whole gang was there to celebrate. The party was held in the evening, and Cami looked stunning as we walked in and around University of Toronto. We just beat the rain after capturing beautiful family photos outside the U of T Faculty Club … and then the party got underway, and Keston of the Megan Boys went all out and brought the night to a stellar success. Coincidently of course, this was the night that the Toronto Raptors clinched the division and brought us into the finals. There was many an iPhone set up on the table and finally a larger computer screen around which everyone gathered. What are way to end the night. Mazal Tov, guys!!

Rebecca’s Bat Mitzvah: May 18, 2019

Rebecca’s bat mitzvah took place at the Maple Downs Golf & Country Club north of Toronto. I love photographing here, a vast expanse of green grass and bright flowers. Rebecca and I did a quick walk around before the event was underway. She looked amazing and really had a good time in front of the camera. Arlene Moshe was the officiant of this service, she runs a mitzvah service so inviting and inclusive. Once done, we headed down stairs to a party like no other, SuperFly were on hand to take this event to the next level, and they did. What a great night, Rebecca, you did an amazing job today. Jillian’s Bat Mitzvah: May 11, 2019

Jillian’s bat mitzvah, Jillian’s family are family friends so I was happy to have part of my gang at this event. We started outside The Rosehill in the beautiful gardens across the road, before heading back into the venue to start the ceremony. It was special to have one of Jillian’s family member officiate over the ceremony, and it was obvious that much time, energy, and patients had gone into producing such a stellar mitzvah. Jillian was fantastic, holding down centerstage from beginning to end. Once the ceremony was over, the party really begin. Bounce Entertainment’s Tiffany was on hand to add their special brand of magic to the night. The food was delicious, the music was inspiring, and Jillian’s group of Randolph Dance kids brought it up a notch… this party went well into the night. Jillian, you were amazing, so happy to have been a part of it.

Samantha’s Bat Mitzvah: May 19, 2019

Samantha’s bat mitzvah, well this was one crazy affair, we had a rehearsal at the Adath Israel Synagogue one beautiful afternoon in May, sun was shining, it was warm, Samantha looked stunning, and the whole family was ready to go. Joking aside, and there was plenty of that amongst these kids, we managed some fantastic Torah photos and photos of the family before wrapping up in anticipation for the weekend… and the weekend did not disappoint. The party was held at the Warehouse in Downview Park, the Megan Boys were on hand with Justin holding down MC duties. The food was spectacular, the room stellar, and delightful Fern Cohen tied this one up together beautifully. Samantha, you did an amazing job stealing the show. Can’t wait for the next one. Elijah’s Bar Mitzvah: May 12, 2019

Elijah’s bar mitzvah too place at the amazing Beth Torah synagogue in Toronto. I love photographing here, it is so bright and spacious. This family is one cool yet quirky bunch, the perfect combo. Elijah was great, reciting for friends and family around the Torah, calm and collected. Rabbi Yossi Sapirman runs a very inclusive and inviting ceremony, and this was not to disappoint. We started off outside photographing in the spring-like sunshine before heading inside for the ceremony. Lunch at Beth Torah was delicious and this musical duo on hand, singer and guitarist, were fantastic (My two cents as a musician myself).  Mazel Tov.

Reuben’s Bar Mitzvah: May 11, 2019

I photographed Reuben’s rehearsal at Beth Torah synagogue one lovely spring afternoon. I’ve known this family for a few years now, and I have come to really enjoy there unusual humor, quirkiness, and those red haired kids, oh my!!! We had a great time inside and outside, and then Ben was at hand for the party.

What an amazing night!!!  For everyone who knows this family, no explanation necessary.  For those who don’t (and I can’t imagine that’s too many people), welcome to laid-back funsville. This is an amazing family and I’m super happy I’ve come to know them over the years.  Although I was disappointed they were sworn to refrain from playing any Grateful Dead or Phish…..it was still a killer party.  

The party was held at Revival on College, easily some of the best food I’ve ever photographed let alone eaten at a bar mitzvah.  When you walk through the front door and the first thing you see is a Centre Street Deli carving station……you’re in for a good night. Cap that off with “THE SLAW” from Lee and Jordan from Magen Boys and you’re good to go.  Thanks again for letting me be a part of this amazing night.  Mazel Tov!!!

Jonah’s Bar Mitzvah Ceremony: May 11, 2019

I met Jonah and the family at their house for a pre-mitzvah photo shoots, just friends and family on a stunning spring night. This was perfect for photos, beautiful back-light on the porch, you could not have picked a better location.  The next day we were at the Shir Libeynu congregation on St. Claire, I love photographing here; perfect angles and bright foyer, always a joy. Jonah is one cool cucumber; a smiling teenager in a joyful mood and wanting to please.  It is easy to capture a ceremony in this space; large, spacious, and easy to move around. Loved hanging out with you guys, definitely looking forward to the next one.  Mazel Tov, guys!!!

Daniel’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: May 10, 2019

My second time round with this family was another fantastic afternoon. Only one more child to go (unless they have more kids). We met at the north Beit Rayim synagogue for a rehearsal one spring afternoon.  I have been here many a time and it does not disappoint, the court-yard outside for photos is perfect, and the inside hallway is classic. Rehearsal done, we met a few days later at the family home for pictures around the pool, ‘dags’ included. Obviously I could not shoot the Saturday ceremony but I know Daniel did an amazing job.  Mazel Tov!!!

Kayla’s Bat Mitzvah: May 5, 2019

Kayla’s Bat Mitzvah was held at my favourite (photography) synagogue, the expansive Beth David Synagogue in North York.  It’s amazing to photograph there; bright, big, inviting, just totally cool.  Kayla was just fun.  We photographed the rehearsal a few days before and then the main event on the Sunday.  A sunny day, one of the few this spring, but a welcomed sight.  Lovely service, a warm crowd, humorous speeches, and just a fun time had by all. Scarlett’s Bat Mitzvah: May 5th, 2019

“Hi Ben……it’s Lesley……from grade school…….can you shoot my daughter’s bat mitzvah?”

How much do I love when this happens.  A long-lost grade school friend calls you up to help her celebrate her daughter’s bat mitzvah.  It was amazing…. she literally looks the same since the last time I saw her 25 years ago.  The whole family was beautiful, super fun and high energy.  The extended family showed up in full party gear ready to let loose…..and didn’t hold back. Scarlett was amazing and danced up a storm. Great combination of friends, family and food.  Bounce had the party going non-stop as usual as everyone went home happy and exhausted.

Sophie’s bat mitzvah was held at the spectacular Gardiner Museum on University on a stunningly warm day this spring.  This is a lovely family whom are all friends with my three kids, and we all love hanging out together. It was great to be a guest at this event while Ben was on photography duties.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Emma’s Bat Mitzvah: March 23, 2019

This bat mitzvah party was north of the city at the Riviera Nightclub, started my season after the March break beautifully. Emma is super sweet and accommodating to a fault.  We managed to get some pictures outside before heading to the foyer which has this amazing architecture to use as a backdrop. The family joined us for some photos and we all did relax before the party. Then kids started showing up, lots and lots of kids, because this was a kids party to end all kids parties. Magen Boys‘ MC Jordan, was in fine form (… and appears to have been working out during the winter months).  He held the party together beautifully as only he can. We had a great time, what a nice way to start the season. Mazel tov.

Ella’s Bat Mitzvah: March 31, 2019

I love this blue walled synagogue, I’ve been there over the years and never get tired of photographing. Small? Yes, but it has such wonderful architecture and color, and today, it did not disappoint. Ella was great, she looked beautiful throughout our photo shoot and continued through the family portraits. She’s such a sweet kid, very accommodating and helpful. We photographed the family and then adjourned to the Dani Event Centre where, if you’ve never tasted the food, you’re missing out. DANI’s food is spectacular, there’s no other way to describe it.  The best kosher lunch you’ll find in the city. Thanks for having me out guys, looking forward to next one. Mazel Tov.

Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah: March 24, 2019

What a nice venue to spend a Sunday morning, The Boulevard Club down on Lake Ontario is just perfect for a spring morning bat mitzvah, and today was Rachel’s. The weather cooperated well, nonetheless, Rachel had to ‘jacket up’ for some outdoor photos.  She’s such a great kid and looked particularly stunning this morning. The ceremony inside was a humanistic service officiated over by Eva Goldfinger, very inclusive and moving. Rachel was fantastic, spoke with grace and conviction. Post ceremony was a schmooze-fest; eating, laughing, and generally celebrating with the family… and let’s not forget that amazing chocolate cake. Mazel Tov guys!!

Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah: February 2, 2019

Well this was a fun mitzvah, Matthew’s mom was someone that I met in 1997 in Israel and we reconnected now some 20 years later for her son Matthew’s bar mitzvah. Fun family these guys, all laughs and giggles. We had to serious things down a little bit for our rehearsal photo shoot but it was difficult to keep these guys from just cracking up.. loved it. The cold didn’t stop us either, we ventured into the January weather, if only for a minute, to get some pics outside the Holy Blossom Temple. Once rehearsal wrapped, we were on course for the Saturday main event.  I was on hand for the schmoozefest/brunch that was post ceremony.  Good times.  Mazel tov!!

Veronica’s Bat Mitzvah: January 26, 2019

It’s amazing that the first mitzvah of my year turns out to be a family I know and a fantastic party to boot, what a great time we all had. Veronica is one of those kids that is fun to photograph, she makes you laugh, and is just an all-around joy. She was definitely in a good sporting mood to venture outside on Saturday evening to let me get some pictures before the sun went down. If you recall, this was not a warm January evening. Once done, it was into The Factory and up against the wall, so to speak, for family photos. The room looked great, Shawn from Sole Power was also making his return with his family since the last simcha, and we just partied late into the night. Mazel Tov!!!

Erin & Aubrey’s B’not Mitzvah: Dec 15, 2018

For the last party of the year, it was amazing to be shooting for an old friend and her lovely family.  I had never shot an evening event at The Brickworks but knew it was going to be a fun place to shoot. The venue didn’t disappoint, and neither did the party goers.  Every partied like it was the last big party of the bat mitzvah season.  The energy was high, the food was fantastic and Bounce Entertainment kept everyone going well into the night. These two girls just stole the show with their engaging personalities and class.  Mazel Tov, guys!!
