Aaron’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: June 4, 2024 My second time around with this wonderful family, and back to Temple Sinai we did go. I took Aaron for a little walk around the garden which I am apt to do whenever I photograph here. This synagogue lends itself to photography with interesting and fun backdrops, and today did not disappoint. Aaron was great, up for the task. I added his sister into some photos before gathering up parents and grandparents. We hung out in the garden for a while and then headed into the sanctuary for the ubiquitous pictures with the Torah. This was just a fun photo shoot, everyone was really happy and in a good mood, we just had a good time in anticipation of the bar mitzvah a few days hence. Jesse’s Bar Mitzvah: May 30, 2024 I met up with Jesse and his family at the Beach Shul, joined by one of my favourite bar mitzvah officiants, Moshe Saadon. We practically took over the place, which was amazing. Jesse was ready for his close-up and made a great subject. Although there wasn’t much around the Beach Shul, we managed to carve out some photo opportunities against the urban backdrop that is the beach.  Jesse’s sister took a turn in front of the camera, followed by some shots with his parents and extended family, wrapping up the portrait session, we then headed into the sanctuary for a wonderful ceremony filled with warm speeches and proud parents—the usual mitzvah magic.  After the ceremony, we needed some nourishment, so we made our way to the Beach Club just a bit down the road. This venue is fantastic for a party, and it certainly did not disappoint. This is where I made my exit, leaving them to enjoy the rest of their night.  Mazel tov, Jesse and family! Josh’s Bar Mitzvah Party: May 25, 2024 My second time around with this wonderful family, and it did not disappoint. We gathered at the Village Loft on Shepard and Bayview for a fantastic party. This venue is a photographer’s dream with its amazing light and endless opportunities for great shots. I took Josh for a little walk to do some exploring while everyone was organizing inside. We were soon joined by his siblings—one a seasoned pro from last time, and the other eagerly anticipating her bat mitzvah in a couple of years. With parents in tow, the five of them were ready to kick off the fun. This uniquely tall family brought a lot of joy to the session.  Grandparents and cousins soon joined us, and our portrait session was underway. We wrapped up with a few shots against a great Jackson Pollock backdrop in the parking lot, then headed inside to party. With lots of kids and sunshine, it was the perfect pre-party gathering. The Magen Boys were on deck to deliver a fantastic evening, with Mattan handling MC duties for this one. Josh made his grand entrance holding what appeared to be a Stanley Cup (maybe it was […]

Paul’s Bar Mitzvah: May 23, 2024 I met Paul at Petah Tikva on the morning of his bar mitzvah to capture this young man becoming, let’s say, a “real man” under Jewish law. His morning service was fantastic—he made everyone proud as he read from the Torah and delivered his d’var Torah with grace and confidence.  And if I said the lunch that followed was spectacular, that would be an understatement. It was amazing! This congregation really knows how to throw a party. That was just the warm-up, the real celebration happened a few days later when I met up with the family at the Prosserman JJC on Bathurst near Sheppard. I took Paul and his sisters for a little walk, snapping photos as the late afternoon light gave us warmth and texture. This group is lively, to say the least. I’m sure Friday night dinners at their house are a celebration unto themselves! The kids had a blast in front of the camera, so much fun in fact, that we barely managed to get all the extended family and parent photos done before moving on to the schmoozing and party portion of the event.  The food at the JCC […]

Ben’s Bar Mitzvah: May 16, 2024 Ben’s Bar Mitzvah was held on a gorgeous spring morning at Beth David Synagogue in North York. Everyone arrived looking sharp and brimming with excitement for the celebration ahead. We kicked things off with some outdoor photos of Ben and his older sister Rachel. Ben looked dashing in his blue suit, while Rachel stunned in her chic black and white dress. Both were easy-going and a delight to work with.  Next up were family photos with Ben’s lovely parents, followed by shots with his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. As guests began arriving for the morning service, Ritual Director Michael Rubin warmly welcomed everyone and congratulated Ben on his big day. Ben nailed his parsha reading and delivered an insightful D’var Torah that made his family beam with pride.  After the service, everyone headed to the Social Hall next door for brunch. The spread was delicious, featuring bagels, lox, cream cheese, salads, coffee, and dessert. Guests enjoyed the tasty food, lively chats, and celebrating the Bar Mitzvah boy.  Mazal Tov on a wonderful simcha, Ben and family!   All the Photos: HERE

Sam’s Bar Mitzvah: May 18, 2024 I absolutely love the Distillery District for celebrations, especially Archeo Restaurant. My daughter had her bat mitzvah there a couple of years ago, and my fondness for this place has only grown. We had a fantastic morning strolling through this historic and charming location, snapping photos along the way and soaking in all its nostalgic vibes.  Sam and his sister were a joy, relishing in what was found as we explored. Once we wrapped up the family photos, we headed back to Archeo Restaurant where the extended family were waiting for more pictures. Everywhere you point your camera in the Distillery District, you get beautiful colours and creativity, and today was no exception.  With the extended family photos done, everyone settled down for a lovely ceremony in the courtyard. The natural light and interesting angles made it even more special, and the not-too-bright courtyard added to everyone’s enjoyment.  Archeo Restaurant outdid itself with a delicious lunch following the ceremony. Fast forward to the evening, and my colleague Eric Benchimol captured all the party fun.  Mazal Tov, Sam! What a day!   The Story of Sam’s Bar Mitzvah: Selected Photos HERE All the Photos: HERE

Brooke’s Bat Mitzvah: May 18, 2024 I met the delightful Brooke at Beit Rayim for a rehearsal on a spectacular May afternoon before her bat mitzvah. She was in all her glory, and loved the camera. We walked around outside, enjoyed the sun (before the rain), and took fantastic pictures together of her just being herself. Unfortunately we did have to escape the rain so we set up camp in my makeshift ‘studio’ in the foyer outside the sanctuary for some immediate and extended family photos. We wraped up and headed into the sanctuary where we were able to photograph a rehearsal; just a small taste of what she would be doing the following morning in synagogue.  I bid them farewell for a day until we met up again at the Boulevard Club post ceremony. Once again, Brooke was fantastic. Such a delight, this young woman. We walked around just having fun in the sun. I added a couple of parents into the mix, some cousins to spare, and voilà, we have a beautiful photo shoot.  We headed inside for some delicious appetizers, a party run so smoothly by the fantastic Party Crew, wonderful speeches, fun and games, and just […]

Ayla & Jack’s B’nei Mitzvah: May 11, 2024 A fantastic b’nei mitzvah for Ayla and Jack at Habonim went off without a hitch! I met both families on a crisp morning outside Habonim, one of my favourite spots for photos. We enjoyed some quality family time, capturing great shots before the ceremony began and my photography role took on a documentary approach. We snapped photos of grandparents, cousins, and all the family essentials before heading into the sanctuary for the mitzvah service.  Ayla and Jack were amazing—they read from the Torah beautifully and delivered their d’var Torah with passion. Gabi read from the Torah beautifully, making everyone proud. After a delicious lunch, we snapped some great post-lunch photos of Gabi and her friends having a blast.  A few days later, the festivities continued at Toben’s flagship venue, Grace. The vibe was pure party! Gabi looked stunning in her blue dress, and guests arrived all decked out and ready to celebrate. Despite a light rain, nothing could dampen the spirits. Guests mingled and enjoyed delicious finger foods from Tobin while the Magen Boys kept the energy high with Slinky on the mic. The ever-charming Fern Cohen was on hand to make sure everything ran smoothly.  The night was packed with fun, including the hora, speeches, limbo, and all the party essentials. Ricky’s Bar Mitzvah: April 20, 2024 Ricky’s bar mitzvah was a two day event. We first met on Thursday morning for a tefillin ceremony at the Kehillat Shaarei synagogue, and we followed this up with a party on Sunday night at New Age. Back to the morning, Ricky  was good to go early on that Thursday, this was an abbreviated ceremony compared to the Saturday service which was to follow. He read beautifully from the Torah, and made everyone proud. A quick brunch followed the ceremony and we were all looking forward to the Saturday event. Fast forward to Sunday and we met up at New Age, the new Magen Boys space, this was my first adventure at this location.  This was interesting, The New Age Furniture Showroom was the backdrop to our family portraits, we just moved around and made the best of the interesting backdrops. I like these photos, different from anything else I’ve done. We wrapped up our family photos and then proceeded inside to a dance party courtesy of the Magen Boys. Jadon’s Bar Mitzvah: April 20, 2024 Jadon’s bar mitzvah started off at Habonim on Saturday morning with a wonderful ceremony and lunch. Jadon was good to go right off the bat, save for the cool weather, everyone was in good spirits. Albeit, there was lots of “outside, back inside, then outside” photography dance but that’s to expected in the Toronto spring. We got our photos done with the immediate family, and then picked up the extended family in the courtyard at Habonim. Once that wrapped, it was on to the ceremony where it was time for Jadon to shine (like a freshly polished menorah), and he took centre stage. This kid was impressive as a magician pulling a rabbit out of a tallit, he made everyone so proud. We finished up the ceremony with a delicious lunch before taking a little break in the afternoon between ceremony and party. Fast forward a couple of hours and we met up at the Village Loft at Shephard and Bayview where we were ready to party harder than Moses parting the Red Sea.  A couple of pictures outside was to be expected, before we all went in to celebrate. Jude’s Bar Mitzvah: November 2, 2023 And so, after what felt like eons, the last of my offspring has officially crossed the threshold into manhood according to the laws of Judaism. Jude’s saga leading up to this pivotal moment began ages ago, with debates swirling around whether to whisk the whole clan off on a vacation or throw a bash. We settled on a delightful hybrid: a getaway during March break coupled with a cozy service for the inner circle, followed by an all-out dance party for friends and extended family. This grand finale unfolded on a crisp November day, with Jude taking centre stage amidst the backdrop of Album Studios. Sure, we may dwell in the heart of downtown Toronto’s urban landscape, but that didn’t dull the sparkle of our festivities one bit. Pictures immortalized our merry band, from immediate family of cousins and proud grandparents, all captured by my talented photographer friend Franc Natale. Inside Album Studios, Rabbi Yossi Sapirman conducted the ceremony, warm, funny, and inclusive, we all were spirited away by his charm and charisma. Jude’s Torah reading was a masterpiece, weaving eloquence and pride into every word. My modest guitar strumming, some soulful melodies, a […]

Cantor Ben Silverberg was waiting upstairs Morton’ for Ethan to do a quick rehearsal. We caught that action before starting a delightful ceremony. Myles’ Bar Mitzvah: March 23, 2024   Miles celebrated his bar mitzvah at the stunningly renovated Magnolia Event Space on Steeles, a venue I always enjoy photographing in due to its brightness and space. Despite light rain limiting our outdoor options, we smoothly transitioned everything indoors to my “studio.” I captured Miles in his element, along with sibs, parents, extended family, and grandparents. Once done, we were all ready for the ceremony officiated by the charismatic Mel Koenigsberg, who gracefully ushered Miles into adulthood. Following the ceremony, we enjoyed a luncheon, and I must say, if you haven’t dined at Magnolia, I highly recommend it. Paul, the owner, has truly transformed the space into a culinary haven. Adding to the uniqueness of the celebration was a drum circle, a delightful rarity. A traditional hora, heartwarming speeches, adorable siblings, and of course, delicious food, made this a perfect conclusion to a memorable morning. We invited the rest of the family to join us on our adventure, and what turned out to be an interesting time for all of us. We wrapped up, and headed back to the party area where the extended family had arrived and were ready for photos. That did not take away from Ryan celebrating his bar mitzvah, no, this was going to be a party like no other.  I love being back at the York Mills Gallery, this is such a fantastic venue for a bar mitzvah, and today was not going to disappoint. Ryan was in great form as we started out our photography adventure. The chilly weather didn’t stop us, we walked around, got some pictures, and then invited the rest of the family to join us. Uncommon for this bat mitzvah, the party came first while Bella will be called to the Torah in June. But that was OK for everyone in attendance, no one was unhappy to be letting loose with some celebratin’ this Sunday evening in January. Slinky from the Magen Boys was on deck to raise the roof on the Factory Lounge, where this party was taking place. It was just a fun night. Edy’s Bat Mitzvah: December 21, 2023 Edy’s bat mitzvah was the last one of the year for me, and such a special one at that. What might be a tight space for photography turns out to be a very cosy ceremony for everyone attending… and that is how it was to be. Milo’s Bar Mitzvah: December 2, 2023  Photographed by: Jonni & Marley My first run around with this family was very early in Covid, it was just the four of them and me photographing at the family home. A cold day did not deter us from some photos in and around the Gardiner Museum, when I say cold, I mean pretty cold that there was a lot of in and out, lots of hand rubbing, lots of “can we go inside please” but we managed to capture the best photos outside, which is usually the case. (Jonni knows best) Max was great, we added some sisters and some parents before finally giving in to the cold and heading inside to the lovely venue that is the Gardiner Museum. Gabe’s Bar Mitzvah: November 11, 2023 Photos by: Jonni & Indie Super Back to one of my favourite venues, Congregation Habonim, working with one of my favourite photographs,  my daughter, Indie.  She joined me for this one, and it was like ‘take your kid to work day’, except Indie is an exceptional photographer. Gabe was very cool… as in, he looked very suave, but also cool due to winter a-coming on.  We were in and out the synagogue for the morning family photos, but all being said, I am sure in hindsight the family was pretty happy to brave the cold, it was pretty cold.  Moving on, Gabe was up for this morning mitzvah task.  My second time with this family, and everything was in place. Gabe is a confident, charming little dude, but he has grown up since our last adventure two years ago.  We invited his sister and parents to experience the chilled air with us, and reluctantly they did (no choice offered by the photographers ;).  Eventually we all amassed in the courtyard for some grandparents and extended family photos.  Ceremony was amazing as always, and how can it not be, Rab-cantors Aviva and Noam at the […]
