    Simone & Rebecca’s B’not Mitzvah: April 15, 2018

What started out as a wonderful rehearsal a few days earlier at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, culminated into one rocking Sunday night party at the Oakdale Golf Club.  The Magen Boys brought out the big guns for this and together with the delightful Fern Cohen, produced one amazing night of celebration. This was the Sunday of the ice storm and the appropriately named ‘ice cream party‘ was the lay of the land. The pictures tell the ice-cream story. These twins looked stunning, (the other twins looked pretty good too), carried themselves with style and grace, and really made this party into such a special night. The food was delicious, the room looks amazing, and all the party accessories brought forth were a sight to behold. What a fantastic way to end the weekend. Mazel Tov.

This was a lovely tri-mitzvah at the Richmond Hill Golf & Country Club on Sunday morning. This is my third outing out with Alexa and Bradon, what started out months ago at Graffiti Alley in downtown Toronto has finally culminated in a beautiful ceremony in Richmond Hill, albeit in the middle of an April snowstorm but great nonetheless. Added to the mix this time was Dylan, cousin of Alexa and Braden.  All three kids were amazing; well spoken and confident. They delivered a flawless torah reading, avoided a candy barrage, and wrapped it all up in time for brunch.  A good time had by all. Mazel tov guys.

Evans bar mitzvah that took place at Le Parc on Saturday morning. This weekend’s weather starting to turn evil but everyone just braved the snow and slush and headed out to Thornhill to celebrate with the family. Rabbi Cooper was the officiant, and is always very warm and inclusive. A delicious Harry Potter themed brunch was to follow in addition to some lovely heartfelt speeches and accolades towards Evan. Thanks for having me out guys, it was good to spend some time with you.  Mazel Tov.

    Ben’s Bar Mitzvah: Feb 22 & 25, 2018

Ben’s rehearsal took place right and early at the Chabad Romano Centre Synagogue north of Toronto. It was a bright beautiful today and a lovely synagogue to photograph. Being a Thursday morning, I was able to go everywhere and get some pretty interesting angles. The party the following few days was one big celebration at the Bellvue Manor. The Bellvue looks spectacular; open atrium, the room decked to the ‘nines’, there was a sand artist and a canvas artist, and Ben’s martial arts instructor took the kids I though some karate kata.  My favourite was Michael Lupescu on the drums and percussion, he adds so much to every celebration.  A great time had by all, Mazel Tov, guys.

Riley’s bat mitzvah Took place at The Factory lounge in Toronto, a beautiful Havdallah service officiated by the affable Rabbi Erin Polanski. If Riley was anxious and nervous before her ceremony, nobody who saw her read from the Torah would have had any clue.  She wowed the crowd with her seamless eloquent delivery and singing.  Great food and warm friends with fantastic energy, there is no doubt the party went strong well into the night.

So this is my second time around with this family, a few years ago I photographed Jackson’s Bar and Shane was just a young pup, but now he is turned into a man.  We had a great time at the rehearsal at Adeth Israel, and then rocked out after the Havdallah service a week later. Abbey Road was the DJ that night, and rocked the place with music and games like no tomorrow. The kids just had a blast, from virtual reality to basketball to table hockey.  This family really knows how to throw down a party, Jackson’s party brought everyone to the field and this party scored the touchdown. One of my favourite synagogues to photograph is Beth Torah, especially for a Havdallah service at the end of Shabbot.  Rabbi Yossi does such a spectacular job bringing the congregation together and including family and children. Today was no exception. Right from the get go, everyone was so on the same page that this party just rolled along smoothly. We moved from the ceremony, into some schmoozing, and then into the amazing party room.  Sole Power rocked the night offering ‘no quarter’; they were fantastic. Austin, his brother and sister, and well everyone just ‘threw it down’, dancing well into the night, and having the best party this family has seen all year.  Mazel Tov, guys.

    Alexa & Braden’s B’nei Mitzvah Party: March 24, 2018

Well this was the second part of a three-part mitzvah, our first outing was held at Graffiti Alley in downtown Toronto, this kids party was outing number two, and there is still the actual ceremony coming up in a few weeks. I feel like I’m just getting into the groove for the main event. So let’s be honest, when opposite sex twins have a celebration with their own friends, one can only hope that things don’t get ridiculously out of hand but reach a point of ‘awesome’. Well, the point of ‘awesome’ was reached and then some. The Magen Boys took to the stage at the Show Room with no mercy, and both sets of friends, Alexa’s and Braden’s hit the ground running. This was a no-adult event except for immediate family so the gloves came off early. Can’t wait for the final chapter.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Beth Torah is still my favourite synagogue to shoot during the day, the light streams in from the top and is fantastic. Ben and I shared this event as I was a guest so it was a little back-and-forth between us. The ceremony was a joy to behold, Rabbi Yossi doing what only Yossi can do, bring everyone together in harmony and celebration.  Logan is one interesting character; I’ve known this family for many years and can attest to that myself. The safety goggles worn during the candy toss were a nice touch, ’Safety First’, y’know. As part photographer and part guest, I get the best of both worlds.  I get to photograph with Ben, and then eat a delicious breakfast with my wife.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Seth’s rehearsal took place at the City Shul on Bloor St.  My first time photographing at this venue, it was bright and interesting. Seth and his sister had fun; relaxing and playing it up for the camera. Once the weekend came around, caution was thrown to the wind and the party began to rock. We were of coarse at the Eglinton Grand, and there is nothing not grand about this venue. The room looked stunning; so elegant and… well, grand.  Party planner, Rachel Wolfson pulled the event together spectacularly, and as The Boss sings, ‘Two mom’s are better than one“, the two mom’s played their part too.  The food was delicious, the Magen Boys did that outstanding job, and break dancer extraordinaire Kyryll, just ‘went downtown’ for this event, no holds barred.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Sam took on the party with enthusiasm and attitude, and Lucas from PURE Entertainment rocked it out well into the night. He is the best!!! I’m sure dinner at the Warwick residence is none too laid-back or chilled, these boys play off each other at every moment, and all in good clean fun. We had a fantastic three generational rehearsal a few days earlier and then all friends and family gathered for the bar mitzvah ceremony and brunch on the 17th. Jack is just an awesome kid who has now become a man. The synagogue, Beth David Synagogue is such a super-cool space to photograph. It is bright and large an offers ample opportunity for creativity.  Fern Cohen, party planner extraordinaire, tied the luncheon together beautifully. Samantha’s bat mitzvah in late December was fantastic. Held at the Richmond Hill Country Club, one of my favourite places to photograph, it was a special day for everyone. Sam is such a warm and friendly young woman, it was a pleasure to photograph her. This family is pretty chilled and likes to have fun; the perfect way to close the year. This was an especially touching event, Samantha was donating her beautiful long hair to children with cancer.  We had an emotional hair cutting ‘ceremony’ before the party was over. Amazing. Cate and David’s b’nai mitzvah party in early December was one of the most fun parties of the year, one that I will reference as an example of a fantastic nights celebration. It all started a few days earlier with a rehearsal at Beth Radom, and followed with festivities at The Avenue on Saturday night.  This was really the perfect way to begin to close my year, one giant Magen Boys affair with two wonderful families; all the fun you can want in one special night.  Both Cate and David were amazing; loved the camera, loved the attention, loved the stage, and appeared to love celebrating together as cousins.  Thanks for having me join you guys.

Jonni Super Photography: 2017 – The Year In Review

What a year it has been!!

This was a fantastic year, 2017. I returned from Israel in November of 2016, and relaxed through the new year before diving straight into the 2017 wedding and mitzvah season. I ended up filling the year with projects and client sessions and parties and people and families, and of course, weddings and mitzvahs.

This year, I had the honour of photographing over 60 events.  Thank you to all of the wonderful clients who made my job so much fun! In addition to the new clients that I’ve had the honour to photograph this year, it is been such a treat to see past families return with younger siblings who are at mitzvah age. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the kids grow up and change, and seeing them a year or two later is wonderful. I promise to never take for granted the privilege of documenting the special times in these families lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to photograph you all as you grow, marry, and come of age.

So now on to some of the photos, shall we?

This is my favourite part and will hopefully become an annual tradition because it makes me stop, pause, and reflect on all the amazing people that I’ve had the chance to photograph this last year. It’s such a gift to take a step back from this crazy life and see the beauty of the big picture, not just all the little moments that comprise it but the GREAT BIG PICTURE. I don’t see the flyaway hairs or closed eyes, the awkward tween poses and the weird expressions. I just see the beautiful, shining faces looking back into my lens. I see compassion, joy, pride, love, and hope.  It is always an important reminder of why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

The photos here are not necessarily the best or the most perfect or the most memorable, but they were the photos that made me stop and take a second look. Just something in the eyes, or an expression, or a smile that made me choose.  I’ve put together one photo from most every event, enjoy.

    Jonni

    Jake’s Bar Mitzvah: Dec 2, 2017

Jake’s family travelled early and far for this celebration, but in the end it was all worth it.  The days came together beautifully; the ceremony at the Chabad Flamingo Synagogue on Thursday morning and the wild and crazy party at the Pickle Barrel on Saturday night. Jake was in fine form on both occasions, read from the Torah beautifully and “became not just a man, but THE man”. That too was quite evident on Saturday when you held court in front of a wonderful group of his family and friends.  Bounce Entertainment rocked the house and brought everyone to a celebratory high. Thanks for having me photograph you guys, enjoy.

    Jonah’s Bar Mitzvah: Dec 10, 2017

I photographed Jonah’s bar mitzvah rehearsal at this beautiful synagogue north of Toronto, the Zichron Yisroel Congregation. The blue walls always look fantastic.   It just so happened that e-Zone party a few days later offered up the same  striking blue background, so of course we took it advantage of that wall too. Jonah was in fine form, a bright and polite young man who together with his brother, must give their parents a run for their money, I’m sure the household does not offer a dull moment between these two, with sports and approaching teenage years.  These were two really special nights, thanks for having me photograph you guys.

    Ellie’s Bat Mitzvah: Nov 18, 2017

Ellie’s bat mitzvah was a pretty wild and crazy affair. She is one special young lady who has now become of age… watch out world. We had a lovely rehearsal and portrait session at the Beach Hebrew Institute, a nice and quaint little synagogue in Toronto, and then the party at the Hot HousePure Entertainment was the MC and totally brought the roof down on this little restaurant. The food was spectacular as to be expected, the atmosphere exuberant as to be expected, the crowd was warm and inviting as to be expected, and the evening was just awesome.  Way to go, Ellie!!!

    Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah: Nov 25, 2017

I loved photographing this family in the park, followed by a rehearsal, and then a few weeks later, the portraits, ceremony, and party.  I got to spend quite a bit of time with them, (ironically I passed their house often to avoid the Eglington / Bathurst  construction mess) … and enjoyed every minute.  Rachel is one little rising star, ready to take on the world, her little sister Erin is just waiting in the wings. Both kids are delightful, playing it up for the camera and enjoying every second.  We headed to the Alexander Muir park before the fall temperature got too cold and had a wonderful session as the fall colours encroached. The rehearsal and ceremony at Beth Tzedec it was a joy, and then finally the Magen Boys party after the ceremony topped off a few weeks of fun.  Rachel, well done!! Jacob’s Bar Mitzvah: November 11, 2017

Jacob’s bar mitzvah took place on a crisp November morning at the Donalda Club. A perfect opportunity to photograph the fall colours in Toronto, we had a fun time outside, just laughing and having fun. Jacob and his brother are like two peas in a pod, at least in front of the camera. Playing it up and joking around was the order of the day. Once inside, we were more serious, and we settled in for some portraits in the alcove before heading into the ceremony.  The ceremony was warm and inviting, with beautiful guitar played by Tom Bellman to accompany the service. Lunch of course it was delicious and the ambiance; majestic.  Mazel Tov, guys.

    The Road to Harrison’s Bar Mitzvah: Oct 7 & Nov 23, 2017

I’ve known Harrison’s dad for over 30 years, and we recently reconnected at the Camp Northland Alumni Dinner, but it was really special for me to spend time with the family both outdoors at the Alexander Muir Park and then a few weeks later at Har Zion to photograph Harrison’s mitzvah rehearsal.  The park is truly amazing, I love photographing here; so lush and green.  These guys were having a grand old time just laughing and kicking it back; very chilled family, they are.  The rehearsal was, notwithstanding my rushing to get there, pretty laid back and fun.  Guys, I had a blast.  You are really a warm and loving family. Mazel tov.

I photographed Aiden at his bar mitzvah rehearsal earlier in the week at the beautiful Temple Sinai on Wilson Ave. I love the outside of the synagogue on a beautiful day, so clear and crisp. The kids were great, laughing it up for the camera.  We went inside for the rehearsal and finished off the day with some family photos.  I met the family again for a lovely post-ceremony cocktail party on Friday evening. The party room at the synagogue was dressed for success with a travel theme, a fantastic jazz band, and some delicious food.  Aidan was great, enjoying the spotlight for the day with his family and friends.  Mazel Tov!!

    Talia’s Bat Mitzvah: Nov 4, 2017

Well I have to say, this was one rocking party. We started off at Talia’s home with some fantastic family photos, both inside and outside. It happened to be a cold day but that didn’t stop us shooting a few hoops along the way. We made our way to Beth Torah where Rabbi Yossi Sapirman lead the congregation in the most warm and inclusive Havdalah service. Always love this synagogue!  We moved into the party room where the Magen Boys were ready to make the night happen, and they did.  Talia was fantastic, a pleasure to photograph and I lovely young woman. Stunning. Looking forward to photographing the boys in a few years.

Jonni: Maya’s bat mitzvah rehearsal and party were fantastic, she’s a lovely young woman and together with her sister, we just had a great time. Photographing in the Adath Israel is always spectacular, so rich in colour and history.

Ben: Sometimes you show up at an event and you just get the sense that “I should really strap in for this one…..I have a feeling its gonna be a wild one”!!  Well when you’re shooting a gig at the Magen Boys new event space The Showroom, hometown advantage rules fully apply.  They have every tool at their disposal to throw down a crazy party….and this was no exception!  The Castle crew was all regal and class during the portrait shoot but didn’t hold back once the party started.  Mom led the charge as she kicked off her heels, and she and her crew gave the young party goers a run for their money; killer dance moves and all.

Tal’s bar mitzvah rehearsal took place at the beautiful Pride of Israel Synagogue. This was my first time at this synagogue and it was quite a special place to shoot. I loved the portraits down the aisle.  Tal was in good spirits, a little nervous but that would clear up in a day, just in time for the Saturday main event I’m sure.  The whole family was up for some photo fun, and we had a great time.
