Micah’s Bar Mitzvah: November 9, 2024 I love this synagogue, Holy Blossom, what a joy to photograph here on a bright sunny day. So many options, so warm and luminous. And today was one of those days. I met Micah and the family for our second go around in as many years, such was the rehearsal before his Saturday bar mitzvah. We walked around, chatted, took some amazing photos in the stunning November warmth and light, before heading inside and adding some parents and grandparents to the mix. Finally we ended up in the sanctuary with the Torah, and wrapped the day. Fast forward to Saturday when I met up with the family post ceremony and lunch for some family photos. Everyone was in good spirits, well fed, and ready to go, and by go, I mean to their respective Saturday adventures. Mazel Tov guys, great job.   The Story of Micah’s Bar Mitzvah: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Jordan & Emma’s B’nei Mitzvah: November 30, 2024 As we head towards the end of the year, the days are shorter and definitely colder, and this Saturday morning was to be no exception. I met Jordan and her family at. Habonim just as the sun was coming up. We took some indoor photos with Jordan before dashing outside for a few family photos whilst our noses and fingertips froze. It was all we needed, before we switched over to Emma’s family and did the same thing. Once we knew photos were done, we warmed up inside and got ready for the ceremony. Habonim always delivers, beautiful music played by Josh Engel, lovely singing by both Cantor and Rabbi, and just the perfect environment for a coming of age ceremony like a b’nei mitzvah. Everyone read beautifully from the torah, speeches were warm and heartfelt, and we were all treated to a delicious brunch and general fun before we called it a day. Mazel Tov, guys.   The Story of Jordan & Emma’s B’nei Mitzvah Rehearsal: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Benjamin’s Bar Mitzvah: November 30, 2024 This was a rehearsal and party that took place at two different synagogues. Benjamin’s rehearsal was at Beth Emeth on a chilly Thursday at the end of November. I met the family there, and took Benjamin outside for a couple of photos before the real winter took hold. In and out we did go with parents and siblings before settling into photos from the Torah in the sanctuary. We wrapped up that adventure and waited for Saturday’s main event. And by main event, I mean the party in the evening, not necessarily the ceremony in the morning. So we met at Beth Torah, and started putting together different variations of portraits of friends and family before heading into the party room where the Magen Boys were laying down some serious dance moves. We parted late into the night; speeches, hora, delicious food, just fun.  Mazel Tov guys, way to go.   The Story of Ben’s Bar Mitzvah: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Ben’s Bar Mitzvah: December 13, 2024 …And here I am, back at the Family Shul. A beautiful synagogue to take photos of a wonderful family. Ben was ready to go, we went outside into the chilli fall weather to get some photos in the neighbourhood. Eventually we came back inside, took out the Torah, and got our Torah rehearsal photos out-of-the-way. Once good to go, we started to add in parents and a grandparent and an uncle to the mix. Ben was fantastic, so enthusiastic and warm. With torah pictures done, we did another quick walk outside for good measure before calling it a wrap and waiting for the main event on Saturday. Way to go guys, Mazal Tov.   The Story of Ben’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Talia’s Bat Mitzvah: November 21, 2024 As late November weather forces us inside, we took advantage of Adath Israel’s interior to have some photography fun during this rehearsal. Talia was all smiles and laughs, just enjoying her special day before the real day. Grandparents and family all in attendance, we had a fun time with the photographs. Some Torah pictures, some family pictures, some individual pictures, everything we needed to do.  Way to go, Talia, Mazel Tov.   The Story of Talia’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Aubrey’s Bat Mitzvah: November 16, 2024 November 16, and we really notice the early setting sun in addition to the dropping temperature in Toronto this evening. That did not stop Aubrey from being the star of the evening, in front of my camera in all her dazzling beauty. Cold as it was, we all managed to stay outside at least for a little while for some photos. Lucky for us, an enormous balloon tower was erected and housed inside the Boulevard Club which acted as a backdrop for all photos during the night. We came inside for some extended family and grandparents photos before settling in for a beautiful havdallah ceremony and party. Emil from the Party Crew was on board to deliver, in the usual fashion, a fantastic night of music, dance, and party vibes. A hora, some candle lighting, delightful speeches, and this mitzvah was a wrap. Mazal Tov guys, way to go.   The Story of Aubrey’s Bat Mitzvah: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Charlie’s Bar Mitzvah: November 15, 2024 Back to Adeth Israel, and another fantastic family is in front of my camera. My third adventure with these guys did not disappoint.  This photo shoot was a little chillier than the last time due to the time of year, but everyone’s enthusiasm and spirit was still there. Charlie was looking sharp, we did a little walk around before bringing out the rest of the family. These are all seasoned veterans, they knew exactly what to do as this is, like I said, mitzvah #3. We eventually went inside for some Torah pictures, some photos of the room for Saturday, and we were done. Mazel Tov guys, way to go. P.S. There was canine involvement at the end of the day.   The Story of Charlie’s Bar Mitzvah: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Mason’s Bar Mitzvah: November 9, 2024 I loved photographing this bar mitzvah on many levels. This is the same location that my family had my son’s bar mitzvah and we totally loved it. I was so happy when Ben told me they were doing the same thing. Secondly, it’s Ben’s kid, Mason. Ben’s has been my photography husband for years, how could this not turn out to be fun. So Mason and I headed out into the crisp November morning around Album Studios on Geary. By the way, this is a photography studio that only recently gets used for mitzvahs it’s like a hidden gem, comes well recommended from anyone who’s had a mitzvah there. So we went for a walk, took some photos, finally made our way back inside to pick up his sister and parents, before adding grandparents and all the extended family into our portraits.  Just a wonderful experience. We wrapped up photos and headed in for our ceremony, Album studios is perfect for this kind of event, a warm and intimate ceremony followed by a delicious meal. No dancing girls and laser beams, just a heartfelt, comfortable, special environment to celebrate this kind of simcha.  Mason […]

Charlie’s Challah Bake & Evening Service: November 8, 2024 Well this challah bake turned out to be an amazing night. I met Charlie at the Family Shul on a gorgeous Thursday evening in November, (you remember November in 2024, it was really warm) and we set about with her friends and family to bake some bread for Shabbat. What a joy. The rebet’sen was leading the whole enterprise, Charlie was in charge and demonstrating in front of the group, and it was just a wild time involving flour, water, yeast, and eggs; the ingredients of Challah.  We wrapped up this balagan, and waited for Friday to complete the celebration. Fast forward to Friday, and we all met outside the Family Shul for some photos, before heading inside for some candle lighting. Charlie was fantastic, such a joy in front of my camera, in such a beautiful setting, on such a wonderfully warm November day. Her brother and mom, a couple of family members, everyone joined in before heading inside to wrap up the ceremony. Rachel’s Bat Mitzvah: November 2, 2024 My second time around with this family did not disappoint, Everyone was back for round two. I met Rachel at one of my favourite locations, Habonim. Albeit a little early to start the photography festivities, we needed time because these guys love their photos, so a 7:30 AM start time was decided upon. Rachel was ready to go, she looked stunning. We took some pictures inside whilst waiting for the sun to rise as this was the last day before daylight wasting. So we have some pictures inside, and then we head out into the beautiful morning light. Bright and cold, but we did manage. We added some sibs and some parents before the large extended family was upon us and waiting. Pictures out of the way, we headed into Habonim for a wonderfully warm ceremony. Rabbis Audrey Kaufman and Aviva Rajsky were beautiful together accompanied by the elegant Josh Engel on guitar. Everything was in place for an amazing celebration. Rachel was fantastic, she read beautifully, she carried herself with poise and grace; she made everyone very proud. A quick turnover of the room, and we were headlong into a delicious lunch. Some […]

I’ve been doing this a long time and I’m always very happy when I show up to a new destination. Charlie was raring to go. We stepped out into the afternoon sunlight with some wonderful photos around the grounds. She looked amazing, and knew how to work for my camera. I added her brother, her parents, and as the sun was going down, the extended family was up to the task. We’re now all captured for eternity, and off we head inside to a wonderful ceremony. Everyone is on site in their disco finest as this was the theme of this mitzvah party. Charlee read beautifully, spoke well, and made everyone so proud. Stella’s Bat Mitzvah: November 2, 2024 Stella’s bat mitzvah took place on a seasonally warm fall afternoon at Album Studios on Geary in downtown Toronto. Everyone arrived looking sharp and excited for the celebration ahead. All against the fall back drop in the courtyard, everyone was so excited to be together for Stella special day. Rabbi Lorraine Rudenberg led the ceremony with warmth and charisma, and spoke words reflecting a deep familial love and tradition. Stella did a wonderful job reading from the Torah, and gave a meaningful D’var Torah filling the room with wisdom and insight. After the service, it was hora time before guests sat down to enjoy a delicious meal. Stella’s parents delivered a heartfelt speech filled with love and pride for the parents. Avery’s Bat Mitzvah: October 31, 2024 This was a lovely albeit, early morning spent with my good friend’s daughter, I go back quite a bit with this family; and today was my opportunity to photograph this darling of a daughter.  Avery was quite spectacular. We met in the dark of dawn outside Adath Israel, and waited patiently for the morning light whilst photographing (for those that know) with a low f-stop, slow shutter, and a high ISO. Avery and I walked around, we chatted, we snapped, we took some unusual photos that I’ve never taken with other kids at Adath before, always a delight for me, and we kept going until parents and grandparents showed up for their time in front of my camera.  Once we were sure everyone was included, we headed inside for a delightful ceremony. Avery was quite amazing, she led the service in its entirety, which was pretty spectacular.  The ubiquitous candy was thrown, the warm words from grandparents and parents were spoken, and we headed off to a delicious brunch whilst waiting for the party on Saturday night. Eden’s Bat Mitzvah: November 21, 2024 This was to be a two location rehearsal, I met Eden and her family at Adath Israel on a spectacular October morning. As you all know, this year Toronto Fall has been extended and we were going to take full advantage of what we had. We walked around outside in the glorious sunshine and warm air, snapping pictures with carefree abandon. We added a brother, some parents, finally some grandparents before heading inside and taking out the Torah for some actual bat mitzvah photos. Once we wrapped this adventure, we headed to Earl Bales Park. There we took a few moments to orient ourselves and then dove head first into what we were expecting , delightful photos of Eden and the family carrying on and having fun in the Fall air. Fast-forward now a month later when the actual bat mitzvah was to take place, and you’re wondering “why such a gap?”… well obviously it was to take advantage of the October leaves. So a Thursday morning in November, and we are back at Adath Israel for a delightful ceremony and luncheon. Eden was fantastic, just a delight. Spoke beautifully and made everyone proud. […]

Dahlia’s Bat Mitzvah: October 26, 2024 Dahlia’s Bat Mitzvah took place at The Carlu on Yonge Street downtown Toronto. This is a classic Toronto party location that has quite the history. We wandered down to a little Parkette around the corner for some photos of Dahlia and her family before coming back to the car loop for extended family and grandparents. The ceremony was to take place inside one of the Carlu ballrooms, while the party would take place in the main room. And that main room looked fantastic. Magen Boys were on deck to make this party happen in a big way, and tonight was no exception. It was an all out fun-fest. Dalia was in fine form, she spoke beautifully and made everyone proud. Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah: October 20, 2024 This was a fabulous bat mitzvah at a synagogue I have not been to yet, the Congregation Knesseth Israel. A small synagogue near the Junction, I had to call my mother who knows everything Jewish in Toronto and ask her what’s up with this old building and small little Jewish community. Apparently I did visit that synagogue when I first arrived here from South Africa 30 years ago. Anyway, moving on. This bat mitzvah was really cool. Sarah was fabulous, we did a little early morning walk around the neighbourhood, we photographed in alleyways and enjoyed the fall colours that Toronto has to offer. When we were done, I added in the rest of the family, and finally cousins and grandparents into the mix. We finished photos and headed inside. Sarah spoke beautifully, and made everyone proud. We wrapped up the ceremony and headed out into the tent for a delicious lunch before taking a few more photographs of her friends and some family. Guys, what a great day. A perfectly dressed young man was ready for a rehearsal.  We walked around the garden, catching every little bit of sunshine we could, until the rest of the family join us. Lexi’s Bat Mitzvah Week: October 26, 2024 Day 1: And so began my four-day escapade with Lexi and her wonderful family. Our adventure kicked off with a photography rehearsal at Holy Blossom. Toronto in the fall—what a showoff! The sunshine was extra generous, and the trees were throwing a full-on colour party. Everything went off without a hitch: Lexi nailed it, the family brought their A-game, and we wrapped up perfectly prepped for day two. Day 2: Enter Cedarvale Park, stage left. This place wasn’t just beautiful; it was showing off. Fire-engine-red trees stood like nature’s paparazzi backdrop, and we were the stars of the show. We twirled through sunbeams, dodged joggers, and exchanged pleasantries with curious passersby—all under the watchful gaze of my trusty partner, Stevie the GoldenD. Stars all around. Bring on day three! Day 3: Today’s vibe? Post-ceremony cool-down. We hit up Holy Blossom again for a celebratory lunch after Lexi crushed her bat mitzvah service. The pressure was off, and the mingling was on. Schmoozing, munching, and basking in the afterglow of success—we’d officially hit the halfway mark, and spirits were still flying high. Aiden’s Bar Mitzvah: September 19, 2024 Photos by: Justine and Jonni On a crisp, sunny Fall morning, Aiden’s Bar Mitzvah kicked off at Beth Tzedec in midtown Toronto, and let me tell you, the vibe was sharp and buzzing with excitement. The Rabbi welcomed everyone, and the ceremony was pure magic. Aiden absolutely crushed his Torah reading and nailed his D’var Torah. Proud family smiles all around—seriously, their faces could’ve lit up the entire room!  Post-ceremony, it was time to eat!
