Ayla’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal & Party: May 6 & 10, 2025 Ayla and I had a fantastic little photo shoot at Adath Israel — her bat mitzvah rehearsal session. The weather was spectacular, and we met early in the day, so everything was bright and beautiful. I absolutely love this synagogue for photography. We wandered around, chatted, snapped photos, and soaked up the sunshine. Add some siblings and parents into the mix, and we were set. Ella’s grandparents were on deck too, rounding out the crew nicely. We wrapped up portraits before heading into the sanctuary for some Torah shots. Way to go, Ayla — you were amazing. Now we wait for the big party Saturday night. I met back up with the family at the Novotel in North York. Ayla was mitzvah-ready and geared up for some awesome photos. From the hotel, we spotted the park below and figured it’d be the perfect spot. Off we went, in search of cool backdrops, and what followed was basically a photo safari, with extended family joining in on the fun. Much laughter, lots of love, and before we knew it, it was party time. Darryn from PURE Entertainment was on top […]

Kai’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: May 8, 2025 That was quite a rehearsal at Temple Sinai. A lovely, boisterous family; four kids, parents, and a couple of grandparents. Just balls of energy. I took Kai outside into the garden for his personal photo session, as I tend to do. This kid was sharp, red hair on fire, suit cut to perfection, total style.  Little siblings were keeping tabs on us, but everything flowed smoothly. We added parents and kids into the mix.  and a bit of manageable chaos ensued.  [Side note; In all my photography adventures, there is always a bit of organic chaos to manage and document. This was one of those times. So many kids, so much personality, lots of laughter and giggles, but somehow everything finds its place, and at the end of it all, everyone just had a good time.  Maybe a little Photoshop here and there, but that’s beside the point. The process was a blast, and the results speak for themselves.] Moving on…  We wrapped up outside with family portraits, then headed in for some Torah and group photos. Great day, beautiful weather, and a whole lot of personality. Bring on the Saturday mitzvah. Mazel […]

Nathan’s Bar Mitzvah: May 12, 2025 What a lovely morning with Nathan and the family. We kicked things off with photos at the Wychwood Barns. I love this venue, and we picked it mostly because it happens to be near Chabad Midtown, where the bar mitzvah was taking place.  So there we were, meeting at the Barns for a little pre-ceremony photo session with Nathan, his brother, and mom and dad.  Nathan was in great spirits, we did a loop around the building before adding in the rest of the gang. Once we wrapped up, we made our way over to Chabad where friends and family were ready to celebrate.  A beautiful ceremony, delicious food, some delightful speeches, and just like that, a young boy has become a man.  Way to go, Nathan. Zachary’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: May 7, 2025 Zachary’s rehearsal yesterday at Beth Emeth was fantastic. A little construction out front? No problem, we still got some awesome shots, took a walkabout, and soaked up the spectacular weather. Zachary and I wandered a bit, he showed me his best angles, and we just had a blast.  Enter two siblings and two parents, and this whole little photo shoot really came to life. A few grandparents and cousins joined us toward the end, and we wrapped up portraits in style.  Then it was time to head inside for some Torah shots. Beth Emeth never disappoints, those stained glass windows and silhouette moments are always a favourite. A little of this, a little of that, and now we’re all set for Saturday’s ceremony. Sadie’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: April 29, 2025 What a fantastic rehearsal at one of my all-time favourite synagogues in Toronto, Holy Blossom. The light in that place is just dreamy, and there are endless nooks and crannies for great photo ops. Honestly, if synagogues gave out frequent flyer points, I’d be platinum here by now.  Sadie was an absolute delight. This was technically our second shoot together though she was just a tiny human the first time and said that she didn’t remember me (I’ll let it slide). I remember her though!  We started with a little wandering outside, because when spring gives you sunshine, you take it, then headed inside to scout some special spots for photos. Throw in the family, some photogenic grandparents, and boom: the perfect pre-mitzvah rehearsal shoot.  We wrapped things up with the classic Torah shots in the sanctuary, because no bat mitzvah rehearsal is complete without one good “Torah” moment, and called it a day.  Mazel Tov, team Sadie! That was a solid rehearsal. Can’t wait for the main event!   The Story of Sadie’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Yael’s Bat Mitzvah: April 26, 2025 What a fantastic rehearsal with Yael! A true mitzvah photography pro by now, this wasn’t her first rodeo, thanks to her two older brothers paving the way. She’d seen it all, done it all, and knew just how to strike that perfect Torah pose. We met at Adath Israel on a glorious Spring afternoon, prime time for photos, fun, and a little grandparent schmoozing. Once the official rehearsal wrapped, we did the classic Torah pics (because it’s not a rehearsal without them), then packed it up and headed into the sunshine. Yael was in top form: megawatt smile, twinkle-in-the-eye energy. Seriously, how could the photos not be amazing?  We got the full cast: brothers, parents, grandparents, both sides, naturally. A picture-perfect mitzvah crew.  Fast forward three days, and we’re living it up at Richmond Hill Country Club for a lunchtime celebration that checked every box: exquisite, delicious, and very Spring-in-the-air-ish. (First time back in Richmond Hill this year, and it was nice to see signs of life… even if the trees were still hitting snooze.). Yael and I snuck outside for a little stroll—no blooms yet, but plenty of good vibes. Then we rounded up […]

Michelle’s Bat Mitzvah: April 19, 2025 Michelle’s bat mitzvah, what can I say? My second time with this incredible family, and once again, they did not disappoint.  We kicked things off at the Boulevard Club on Steeles on an almost-spring day; chilly, but manageable. Michelle and I snuck away for a little photo walk, just the two of us (well, almost… her siblings were full-on spies, popping up like secret agents). Didn’t slow us down a bit. Eventually, the whole family joined in, and we rolled into some grandparent and cousin portraits before the real fun began.  And then, party time.  Inside we went, just as guests started to arrive. Michelle was all giggles and squeals, absolutely lighting up as each friend walked through the door. A little mingling, the classic hora (it’s not official till someone’s in the chair), heartfelt speeches, some delicious food, the Party Crew brought. the. house. down. Games, dancing, music, mayhem; the best kind.  From one epic moment to the next: a lovely candle lighting turned into a conga line, which somehow turned into a limbo showdown. Nonstop energy.  Such a joy to be part of it all. Mazel Tov Michelle, way to go.   […]

Isaac’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: April 6, 2025 It was such a pleasure to be back at the BAYT — it’s been quite a while since I photographed there. I think the last time may have been pre-Covid, which feels like a whole other lifetime.  I met Isaac and his lovely family on a bright and breezy Toronto spring Sunday, you know, the kind of spring where the sun says “yes” but the wind still says “not so fast.” What was meant to be a quick little photo shoot and rehearsal turned into something much bigger (in the best way).  Isaac was in fine form, we wandered around the synagogue, chatting and snapping photos as we went. Just easy and fun. Then his brothers joined in, slightly surprised by the whole “spring” temperature situation, but they powered through with style and good humour. The parents? Totally composed and on point, like seasoned photo pros.  Eventually we headed back inside, where we were greeted by what felt like a small village, a big, beautiful extended family full of kids, parents, and lots of energy. Honestly, a photographer’s dream.  The BAYT is a joy to shoot in when it’s quiet, it turns into […]

Maddie & Charlie B’nei Mitzvah: April 5, 2025 Well, this was one of those classic Toronto spring mornings, a little drizzle, a lot of heart. The rain made a cameo, but it didn’t stop us from having an absolutely epic B’nei Mitzvah celebration.  I met the family bright and early at Habonim, and we jumped right into the action. I took Maddie for a little stroll, not the usual outdoor walkabout thanks to the weather being Toronto-ish, but we made it work indoors, and it was perfect. Then we did a little switcheroo, bringing in Charlie for some solo shots, followed by parents, grandparents, and the whole fabulous crew for a wonderfully cozy photo session.  We wrapped up the portraits in the foyer, then headed into the sanctuary where the real magic happened. These kids, naturals. Full of grace, charm, and that low-key sparkle that makes everyone smile. The grandparents were glowing, the family beaming, pride levels were rising.  As always at Habonim, the ceremony was a musical delight, Josh on guitar bringing all the good vibes, and the Cantor Lee and Rabbi Audrey harmonizing like a dream.  Once the ceremony wrapped, it was time for some serious schmoozing, a […]

Benji’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: April 4, 2025 What a lovely spring afternoon at Temple Sholom — the sun was out, the vibes were good, and Benji was all smiles. Some of those smiles were gently coaxed by his sister and parents, and some were that classic teenage grin he’s been perfecting over the years, both equally fantastic.  We wandered around outside in the sunshine, chatting about baseball and snapping photos while Benji brought the charm. Such a sweet kid. Then his sister jumped in and the cuteness levels pretty much doubled.  Eventually the rest of the crew joined, parents, grandparents, a sprinkle of extended family, and we wrapped up the portraits with all the love and laughter you’d hope for.  It was time to head into the sanctuary for the main rehearsal event: photos with the Torah.  Beth Shalom never fails to impress, it’s got that big, beautiful expanse that makes every shot feel epic. We captured some really lovely rehearsal moments with Benji and the family, mixed in a little silliness, and called it a wrap.  Time to relax before the big day. Simon’s Bar Mitzvah: March 29, 2025 Round two with this amazing family did not disappoint—it was the perfect sequel to our first adventure a few years back! Simon’s mom and I go way, way back (25 years, but who’s counting?), so getting to capture another family simcha with them was an absolute treat.  Let’s discuss Toronto spring weather, and let’s just say… it had other plans. Bayview Golf & Country Club is usually a photographer’s playground, but with the rain calling the shots, we found ourselves cozied up inside this gorgeous venue instead. No complaints, though—it made for some pretty special moments. I took Simon on a little indoor exploration mission, scouting for cool photo spots before diving into family portraits.  The service was beautifully led by Cantor David Cooper, someone I’ve had the pleasure of working with for years. And after the formalities? Time to party! Hilarious speeches, top-tier food (Bayview never disappoints), and the kind of warm, joyful schmoozing that’s basically a trademark of this family.  Such a fantastic night. Abigail’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: March 28, 2025 What a stellar rehearsal at Holy Blossom with Abigail and her wonderful family! Fun fact—Abigail’s aunt is my good friend and colleague Justine, who often finds herself behind the camera photographing with me. She gave me the inside scoop that Abigail was an absolute gem, and that was no exaggeration.  We had a blast wandering inside and out, doing our photo thing, capturing moments before reuniting with the rest of the family for a grand portrait session. Holy Blossom is hands-down one of my favourite synagogues to shoot in Toronto. It’s a photographer’s paradise—soaring architecture, gorgeous natural light, and colours that beg to be captured. The space just draws you in as it did today.  We wrapped up the immediate family photos, and expanded the frame to include the extended crew, and then took a few special photos inside with the Torah. But the heart of this rehearsal was all about family, and we got that in spades.  Mazel Tov, guys. So much fun.   The Story of Abigail’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: Selected Photos: HERE All the Photos: HERE

Sam’s Bar Mitzvah: March 27, 2025 Round two with this awesome family did not disappoint! Sam’s older sister was one of my early Covid bat mitzvahs, so this felt like a full-circle moment. Sam was up and ready to roll bright and early on this Thursday morning. We met at the Miles Nadal JCC on Bloor, and wasted no time soaking up the gorgeous spring sunshine for some pre-ceremony pics. A little stroll, a few laughs, add in the parents and siblings and then, it was showtime.  By the time we stepped back inside, the energy was buzzing—people were ready to go! Some quick schmoozing, a few deep breaths, and then Sam took the stage. He read beautifully, and with his whole grade from Paul Penna there in full chorus mode, the vibe was just right. Ceremony? Nailed it.  Next stop: brunch down the hall—because what’s a celebration without great food? Ezra’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal & Party This was a couple of nice days spent with Ezra and his family. We did things in reverse order, the Barmitzvah family photo shoot and party first, and then a few weeks later, we took out the Torah for some rehearsal photos. Ezra was good to go on both occasions and enjoyed the festivities. The party at The Bubble [where I’ve never been before] was fun. Kids just love bouncy castles, laser tag, and cake, right, how can you not. We photographed portraits at a lovely Photography Studio north of Toronto, Bloom Studios [also not been there]. The rehearsal was at a synagogue, Ayin L’Tzion Zichron Yisroel, that I do not frequent but I have been there. And it’s not very often at a rehearsal that we get to play on a spiderweb playground. Interesting of course the photograph on such a snowy day in Toronto, just one of those years. Asher was in excellent form for this afternoon’s photo shoot, we wandered around the synagogue and into the park across the street. Things are pretty wet so not much sitting around but we got what we wanted before adding in some extended family and his mom. Our second time around, we were seasoned professionals by the time we were done. We were all waiting for the party to happen on Sunday night. Pure Entertainment was in the house, and Darren was charge of knocking this one out of the park, and that he did; they were on top of their game. We started off with some photos of the kids and parents, before adding the rest of this very large family into the mix… and then it was time to party. The whole family took turns inside and outside just getting some cool photos before the rehearsal. Tyson was great, he put up with all my requests with a smile. His sister of course was a seasoned professional from our last adventure a few years ago, albeit the weather was much kinder last time.  We wrapped up our family photos and headed into the sanctuary for some Torah photos at the beginning of the rehearsal. Took some pictures outside before heading inside for a wonderful ceremony. Ethan was great, he read confidently from the Torah, we threw candy, we danced and sang and made the most of this celebration. Wrapped up the ceremony and we headed in for a delicious breakfast. I arrived at the Lodzer Centre early in the morning ready to go. I haven’t been back to the synagogue since my nephew had his bar mitzvah here almost 10 years ago so it was sentimental to be back in this space, and here we were.  Enter stage left: one daughter, one son, mom and dad, we were in and out of the cold before you could say b’nei mitzvah, because we had work to do before the ceremony. We wrapped up these early morning photos, and took some pictures of extended family before heading into the sanctuary for the main event. These kids were great, they read from the Torah beautifully and conducted themselves with a charm and grace.  The lovely service came to an end, and we headed up for a delicious breakfast, some speeches, and a general wrapping up of the morning. Jordan & Emma’s B’nei Mitzvah: November 30, 2024 As we head towards the end of the year, the days are shorter and definitely colder, and this Saturday morning was to be no exception. It was all we needed, before we switched over to Emma’s family and did the same thing. Once we knew photos were done, we warmed up inside and got ready for the ceremony. Habonim always delivers, beautiful music played by Josh Engel, lovely singing by both Cantor and Rabbi, and just the perfect environment for a coming of age ceremony like a b’nei mitzvah. Benjamin’s Bar Mitzvah: November 30, 2024 This was a rehearsal and party that took place at two different synagogues. Benjamin’s rehearsal was at Beth Emeth on a chilly Thursday at the end of November. I met the family there, and took Benjamin outside for a couple of photos before the real winter took hold. In and out we did go with parents and siblings before settling into photos from the Torah in the sanctuary. We wrapped up that adventure and waited for Saturday’s main event. And by main event, I mean the party in the evening, not necessarily the ceremony in the morning. So we met at Beth Torah, and started putting together different variations of portraits of friends and family before heading into the party room where the Magen Boys were laying down some serious dance moves. Charlie’s Challah Bake & Evening Service: November 8, 2024 Well this challah bake turned out to be an amazing night.
