Ryan’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: April 4, 2024

It’s been quite a while since the beginning of this adventure in April and the end of this adventure in October but we are finally done. What started out as Ryan’s bar mitzvah rehearsal at Beth Tzedec a few days before his bar mitzvah, has ended with a beautiful family photo shoot in Cedarvale Park. We are done. Our bar mitzvah rehearsal was a hit, Ryan was fantastic reading from the Torah, just enjoying his moment in the spotlight. Once all the mitzvah balagan was over, we settled into a walk through Cedarville just as the fall leaves were coming into colour. Great time guys, mazel tov.

Lexi’s Bat Mitzvah Week: October 26, 2024

Day 1:
And so began my four-day escapade with Lexi and her wonderful family. Our adventure kicked off with a photography rehearsal at Holy Blossom. Toronto in the fall—what a showoff! The sunshine was extra generous, and the trees were throwing a full-on colour party. Everything went off without a hitch: Lexi nailed it, the family brought their A-game, and we wrapped up perfectly prepped for day two.

Day 2:
Enter Cedarvale Park, stage left. This place wasn’t just beautiful; it was showing off. Fire-engine-red trees stood like nature’s paparazzi backdrop, and we were the stars of the show. We twirled through sunbeams, dodged joggers, and exchanged pleasantries with curious passersby—all under the watchful gaze of my trusty partner, Stevie the GoldenD. Stars all around. Bring on day three!

Day 3:
Today’s vibe? Post-ceremony cool-down. We hit up Holy Blossom again for a celebratory lunch after Lexi crushed her bat mitzvah service. The pressure was off, and the mingling was on. Schmoozing, munching, and basking in the afterglow of success—we’d officially hit the halfway mark, and spirits were still flying high.

Day 4:
Cue the grand finale: a kids’ party at The Factory! Teri had this whole thing locked down like a pro. Before diving into the festivities, we captured some stunning family shots in the glorious outdoor light. Then it was go-time. The grandparents had their moment, but the kids stole the show. The hora? Iconic. The candy table? Legendary. The Magen Boys? Absolute rockstars. The energy soared, and Lexi owned it all with style.

By the end of the night, it hit me—this family had become my family for the week. Saying goodbye felt like the end of an epic summer camp, complete with post-party blues. Until we meet again, Lexi and crew. Mazel Tov!

Bella’s Bat Mitzvah Party: January 28, 2024

My third time around with this family could not have been more special. We have grown accustomed to seeing each other in celebration, either in a synagogue, or at a home, but this is the first time we’ve come together at a fantastic kids party. Uncommon for this bat mitzvah, the party came first while Bella will be called to the Torah in June. But that was OK for everyone in attendance, no one was unhappy to be letting loose with some celebratin’ this Sunday evening in January. Slinky from the Magen Boys was on deck to raise the roof on the Factory Lounge, where this party was taking place. It was just a fun night. Bella looked stunning, and there was no time wasted to get this crowd on their feet. Mazal Tov guys, looking forward to wrapping this up in the summer, it will take a while to recover from this evening anyway.

Judah’s Bar Mitzvah: January 20, 2024

It’s always special for me when I have a connection to my clients, and double special when the event is the first one of the year.   I am back from New Year’s vacation feeling invigorated and excited. Judah’s dad and I share an affinity for the bicycle, and have spent many a kilometres in the saddle chatting about this and that, and now this and that has come to pass, and it was a smashing success.  We started off with a rehearsal at Beth Sholom for the family.  Some reading from the Torah, some family fun, but mostly we were waiting for the Saturday night. So fast forward a few days, and I met up with the family at Duke’s Refresher on Front Street for what was going to be a crazy ‘jersey‘ party like none other. This is a location I have not yet been to so that adds to the excitement. Judah was great, we walked around to get acquainted with the place, took some chilled out photos before inviting his sisters and finally parents to join in. Then everything just went crazy as both sides of the family showed up and joined the festivities. Once photos were done, we all wandered downstairs to find that guests had started to arrive, and everyone, as expected, was dressed in a jersey. Totally cool. The night was full of games, basketball, Jesse from Magen Boys holding down mic duties for a wild dance party, and just some fantastic energy to start off the year. Mazel Tov, guys, way to go.

Jolie’s Bat Mitzvah Rehearsal: December 3, 2020

I met Jolie’s family at Temple Sinai for a bat mitzvah rehearsal photo-shoot. Quite a chilly day, I might add, but we managed ourselves nonetheless. Jolie and I got some photos outside before darkness fell, and then headed into the chapel for some Torah photos.  Once that was done, we wrapped things up in the foyer of Temple Sinai with some family photography. Guys, a fun way to spend the afternoon, Mazel tov!!.

Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah: October 26, 2019

Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah was at the Avenue Banquet Hall on a crisp Saturday night.  We were still able to head outside for some amazing red fauna photos in the parking lot.  This family is wonderful, relaxed and ready for a great time. Bounce Entertainment was on hand to offer up the tunes and MC the event. Tiffany put her amazing spin on the evening, and K-man / breakdancer extraordinaire was on hand to show the crowd what real dancing is all about.  We partied long and hard, and finally it was done. No more kids, no more mitzvah’s.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Nathan’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: October 25, 2019

I was back at Chabad Flamingo to photograph Nathan’s bar mitzvah rehearsal and family.  This synagogue offers some nice outdoor photography options, especially when the trees start to change their colour in October/November.  Nathan braved the cold, and we headed outside.  Sibs and parents followed until we were done, and then headed back inside to photograph with the torah and a whole lot of extended family.  All in all, a fun rehearsal photoshoot.  Mazel Tov, guys!!

This was a wonderful romp around Yorkville, from rooms in the Hazelton Hotel, to the theatre in the hotel, to the foyer, and then outside on the street.  Just a fun time for all.

Eli & Evan’s B’nei Mitzvah: September 27th, 2019

Eli and Evan had a rehearsal and family photoshoot with me on Wednesday and a pre-Friday night ceremony friends and family shoot with Justine.  We started at the Chabad of Midtown synagogue on St. Claire before heading to the bridge over the Cedarvale Ravine, just an amazing space to photograph a family.  These kids were great, just having fun before the sun went down.  The Friday pre-ceremony friends and family photoshoot was just that, friends and family, with Justine handling duties.  Mazel Tov, guys.

Jonah & Aviva’s B’nei Mitzvah: September 21, 2019

This was one fabulous party that took place at the Warehouse in North York on a spectacular Saturday evening. Jonah and Aviva were up for some fun, as was the rest of the family, as was Jordan from the Magen Boys, …and fun is what we had. We started outside with some family photos, until we gathered the big family for some group pix. Once that was complete, we were off to the races, and so the party began. Schmoozing and snacking on delectables was par for the course, while the hora and speeches started things off. MC Jordan held down court while both Jonah and Aviva worked the crowd. Just a fun night at the beginning of this mitzvah season. Mazel Tov, guys!

Ben’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: June 20, 2019

I had so much fun photographing Ben’s bar mitzvah rehearsal, we were at Adath Israel Synagogue in the late afternoon, and it was perfect. Ben and I did some walking around outside before the family joined us for some family photos. Inside we managed to get great rehearsal pictures before incorporating the grandparents and great grandparents into the scene. Ben got some style happening y’know, like GQ style.  He’s got that look down, and it’s a good one.  Look out high school.  Mazel Tov Guys!!!

This was a lots of fun, I photographed Talia’s bat mitzvah last year but we were waiting until 2019 spring or summer to photograph the family. Well the day finally arrived and off to BMO Field we did go.  We basically just goofed around and had a fun time in the stadium, no holds barred. It was ours to do with what we wanted.  So nice to see these guys again, great day, guys.

Maya’s Bat Mitzvah: May 6, 2018

Maya’s bat mitzvah was a beautiful celebration of a young woman approaching adult hood. We started with some family photos outside The Warehouse in Downsview Park, and then it was just party all night. Magen Boys as usual raised the roof, there were drummers, there was a guy on stilts, there was just a whole bunch of stuff to entertain and a maze. Fern Cohen (event planner extraordinaire) brought everything together seamlessly.  Maya was so graceful, the family was loving and kind, and her friends spoke so very highly of her, it was just one fantastic night. Mazel tov!!!

Adam’s Bar Mitzvah: October 7 & 8, 2017

Adam’s Bar Mitzvah took place at the stunning Maple Downs Country Club in Richmond Hill. The rehearsal the day before was beautiful and the ceremony on the Sunday even more spectacular. You can’t go wrong photographing at this venue; green everywhere in early October. I’ve known Adam’s parents for 20 years and it was great to reconnect with them. Sunday started with Adam and me walking around the club, photographing and having fun, before we eventually met up with the family and headed into the ceremony; Adam was fantastic, enough said.  The tennis themed lunch was delicious, the amazing Kenny Munshaw holding down the musical end, and everything tied together beautifully by Karen Garscadden from Karen G Events.  So good to see you guys after so many years, definitely looking forward to the next one.

Jared’s Bar Mitzvah: Sept 5 & 10, 2017

Jonni: I photographed Jared’s bar mitzvah rehearsal  at the wonderful Beth Torah synagogue. I love shooting here during the day, the light is fantastic and the room is warm. These guys were all about jubilant displays of affection with no holds barred. We finished up at the synagogue and then went to the park to wrap it up. I was done and Ben took over to photograph the luncheon.

Ben: I love these types of celebrations!  Instead of a big party, they decided to have their closest family and loved ones over for a beautiful catered brunch at their home for the afternoon.  The totally relaxed, unscripted and mutual love for everyone in the room is always such a pleasure to photograph.
