Frequently Asked Questions

A few things you might want to know before we get together. And a few things you probably hadn’t thought to ask.

Before the Big Day

How far in advance should we book?

As soon as you have a date, get in touch. Some dates fill up well in advance, particularly during the busy Mitzvah season. There’s no harm in asking, even if your celebration is just around the corner.

What should we wear for family photographs?

Family photographs are usually taken the day before, or a few days before, the actual ceremony. We generally head to a lovely park, wander around, have some fun and take a whole bunch of photographs. It’s a casual affair, so wear something comfortable that makes you look and feel fabulous!

Coordinating colours is a great idea, but matching outfits aren’t necessary. I’ve put together a handy guide with some examples of colour combinations that work beautifully together. Have a look at What to Wear for Family Photos for a little inspiration.

If we’re photographing your synagogue rehearsal, that’s a different story. Dress as you would for the actual ceremony. Nice clothes, synagogue appropriate, and everyone looking suitably respectable!

Do you help us plan the photography?

Absolutely. We’ll work through the schedule together so there’s enough time for family portraits, extended family, the ceremony and the party.

I’ve also put together a FREE Mitzvah Photo Planner to help you think of everything.

What happens if someone is late or the schedule changes?

It happens. Kids disappear, grandparents get stuck in traffic and speeches run long. We’ll work around things as best we can. A little breathing room in the schedule makes everyone’s life easier.

On the Day

Do you tell us how to pose?

Of course. I’ll guide you when we need a proper family portrait, but I also love the spontaneous stuff. The laughing, the hugging, the ridiculous expressions. Those are often the photographs everyone loves most.

Can you photograph at our synagogue or venue?

Usually, yes. Every synagogue and venue has its own photography rules, particularly during religious services. We’ll confirm what’s permitted ahead of time so there are no surprises.

What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Toronto weather has a mind of its own. If we’re planning outdoor photographs, we’ll have a backup plan. Sometimes that means finding a covered spot, moving indoors or rescheduling a separate portrait session.

Can we give you a list of photographs we want?

Absolutely! But don’t worry, I’ve got a system. After photographing hundreds of families, I’ve developed a pretty good routine for making sure nobody gets left out. We start with the Mitzvah kid and immediate family, then bring in the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and assorted relatives, mixing and matching as we go. It’s organized, efficient and, believe it or not, usually quite fun!

We’ll discuss any special requests beforehand, and I’ll make sure we get those too.

And while we’re talking about planning, have a look at my FREE Mitzvah Photo Planner . It’s full of helpful tips and things you might not have thought of. A little planning goes a long way!

After the Photography

When will we receive our photographs?

I’ll confirm the delivery timeline with you when we book. Your finished collection will be delivered through an online gallery.

Can we download and share our photographs?

Yes. Your gallery makes it easy to download your photographs and share them with family and friends.

Do you retouch the photographs?

I edit the photographs for colour, exposure and overall appearance. More extensive retouching can be discussed if there’s something particular you’d like adjusted.

Can we order an album or prints?

Absolutely. I offer custom-designed albums and professional prints. Albums can be ordered after the event, and I’ll help you choose photographs and put everything together.
