    OneFamily – A Taste for Life: May 24, 2017

    I had the honour of photographing the OneFamily Fund dinner, “A Taste for Life“, at the stunning Artemano gallery earlier this week.  This is the second year I photographed the event, and it surpassed last year’s dinner. The gallery is gorgeous; exquisite modern reclaimed wood furniture set in an idyllic breathtaking space.  From the delicious food to the smooth jazz, the evening was bound to be first class.  This subject for the evening is heavy yet uplifting, OneFamily Fund is committed to providing hope and support to those in Israel who have been affected by terrorism.  The short movie and speeches were inspiring and uplifting, and connected all in attendance in solidarity. It was a pleasure to be a part of the evening.

    Be forewarned… if you are going to a Bain event, you better be ready to party!!  This family does not stop for anyone or anything.  From the moment I got there till the moment I hobbled home, the party was still going strong. Jonni had to take over as I was DONE!!  The Uptown Loft is one of our favourite places to photograph; this Magen Boys venue sure packs a punch.  The vibe, the energy, the food…..always a killer party.  Aiden looked beautiful in blue and presented her mitzvah exquisitely.  A highlight of the ceremony was Aiden and Haley singing quite beautifully together in harmony. (The accompaniment wasn’t too shabby either.)  This was, as is usual with the Bains, quite a heavy hitting affair. You’ve all been to the Bain weddings, now get ready for the Bain mitzvahs.

    I had the amazing opportunity to photograph the Camp Northland fundraising dinner on Wednesday evening. Got to see so many people from so many years ago, everyone looks a little bit older, maybe a little less hair, but just as warm as ever.  Such is the Camp Northland style. A great night for a great cause.

    I’ve known this family since I photographed Gabriella, the sister, about five years ago. This was her older brother Matias’ bar mitzvah at the Shir Libeynu Synagogue. I love the Shir Libyenu congregation; so unique and inclusive.  It was a joy to be back here again, very warm and spirited.  Matias was fantastic; he read well, spoke beautifully, and was a pleasure to photograph. I was able to photograph the ceremony and brunch but it was up to Ben to take care of the party…

    …The bar mitzvah took place at the beautiful Rosehill Lounge.  A hidden gem right in the middle of the city.  The beautiful exposed brick walls and dark wood finishes was a great space to photograph.  The family arrived and I could tell immediately they were going to be warm, fun and ready to have a great time.  Judging by the look on everyone’s faces they did not disappoint.

    Sunday night I was back again with Vivian (party planner extraordinaire) and Mitch (videographer supreme) at The Factory photographing Samara’s Bat Mitzvah. I love this location, a very hip downtown look in North Toronto.   I’ve known Samara’s parents for quite a while, but it was a pleasure to finally photograph these guys as they ‘got down and partied hard’.  We had a great opportunity for some photos outside before everyone arrived, Samara looked stunning in white.  From from what I hear, she swings a pretty mean baseball bat. The evening was spectacular, Samara was fantastic, recited her Mitzvah portion with style and grace.  As usual, Superfly Entertainment rocked hard late into the night.

    This is my second round with these guys, I photographed Stevie’s bat mitzvah a few years ago and it was a so much fun to reacquaintance myself with both the family and my dear party planner friend, Vivian from 2 Steps Ahead, did a spectacular job tying the night together at the spectacular Four Seasons Hotel.  Rachel looked so good, danced up a storm, and had the time of her life.  We were up on the sixth floor with a gorgeous view overlooking the city. Magen Boys were in full swing raising the roof as usual, David holding down the MC position.  This party went into the wee hours, and set the stage for a very tired Sunday morning, I’m sure..

    I photographed Nathan at his bar mitzvah rehearsal at the Beit Rayim Synagogue north of Toronto. This is always an amazing venue to photograph both the portraits and the rehearsal offering both variety and beautiful light for indoor and outdoor pictures. This is such a lovely family, all three kids.  As with sibs that are close in age, they play nicely most of the time, are goofy some of the time, but were a joy to photograph all the time. I photographed the rehearsal but was unable to photograph the party so Ben took over…

     

    …it’s always a blast shooting events for old friends.  Sandra and I basically grew up together at summer camp out on the east coast where we honed our skills for partying and having a good time.  It paid off in spades at the eZone on this fantastic Saturday night.  The kids were amazing and everyone had a great time.  Shooting the Ezone is always a blast…especially when it turns into a camp reunion party!!

    This was a truly special and delightful weekend for me, it’s not often I get to see my teenage photography subject stand up in front of a crowd and belt out a couple of classic jazz numbers, very surprising but amazing.   Joey did it with style and grace belying her age. Rabbi Elyse Goldstein runs an engaging service at City Shul and this rehearsal was no exception, in between the “serious must do’s”, the gang rose the occasion, and that occasion was pure fooling around. This family was all about fun; appropriate when necessary but letting loose when they could. Revival was a lovely venue to photograph in, both inside and out; quaint yet stylish.  Thanks for having me join you for the night, it was the highlight of my weekend.

    Josh’s bar mitzvah took place at the stylin’ Sala Caboto in Toronto. This was a pretty cool venue for a bar mitzvah, slick and stylish. Magen Boys raised the roof and partied late into the night. The usual characters were in attendance; the amazing Kyryll was spinning on his head ‘out of control’, a whole lot of dancers, and the fab Justin as DJ, all were in fine form.  Josh was great, he is a charismatic and charming young man who, if the speeches were all true, is one fine athlete.  His posse of boys were warm, funny, and spoke lovingly of their friend.  This was a great party guys, thanks for having me along.

    Gabe’s bar mitzvah took place on Saturday morning at the Reisman Centre dutifully officiated by Rabbi Erin Polansky from the Neshama Congregations.  Rabbi Erin leads a wonderfully inclusive, contemporary, and inviting service for her congregants.  We all played a bit of musical chairs to get the family portraits photographed but in the end the results were spectacular and everyone did their part. These two brothers are cool, unfazed, and up for anything. The ceremony was followed by a fantastic brunch back at the house which was packed wall-to-wall with friends and family.  My fave, matching purple Converse sneakers.  Thanks for having me out guys, great morning.

    The green room was locked……the arrangements were delayed…..stress started to mount… but it was clear early on that nothing was going to hold this family back from having an amazing sweet 16 party.  Mother and daughter looked absolutely fantastic, and Chloe held her radiant glowing smile the entire night.  The Capitol Theatre was spectacular, the food was top-notch, and the DJ’s from Bounce were super high energy.  No detail was overlooked or too small from the fancy high end chocolate gift boxes to the fruit cocktails.  This made for an unforgettable evening. Thanks again for letting me be a part of and photograph this amazing event.

    Maddy’s bat mitzvah rehearsal and ceremony was held in the beautiful Beth Sholom synagogue in Toronto last week.  Maddy was a delightful, well spoken, fun kid who comes from my warm and loving family. Along with her sister, they played up the rehearsal beautifully, and then Maddy performed the ceremony with confidence and grace. It was such a nice way to spend Thursday morning.

    Jessie’s dad and I go back to high school. I had not seen him for many years until we bumped into each other at a bar mitzvah a few weeks ago. Coincidently, they were looking for a photographer for Jessie’s bar mitzvah rehearsal. I was so happy to be able to accommodate their request, and we spent a wonderful few hours at the beautiful Beth Sholom synagogue reminiscing on old times. Jesse was a fantastic subject; calm, cool, and looking the part.  This family is so warm and loving, there is no doubt that they’ve raised some wonderful kids. It’s also so nice to bump into old friends when you least expected.

    Lexi’s bat mitzvah was destined to be a spectacular event. This was my second adventure with this family, and each outing is a joy to document. We spent some time at the house and then headed to Beth Torah where Rabbi Yossi Sapirman offered up the most amazing Havdallah service, warm, generous, and inclusive.  Sole Power raised the roof as usual, and the whole event came together beautifully under the most-capable direction and care of Candace Zwicker.  Can’t wait for the next one; you guys are the best.

    I photographed Chloe and her parents in the Alexander Muir Park. It was late, a little cold, there was some pre-photo shoot ‘excitement’ due to some unforeseen ‘Jonni’ circumstances, but in the end, everyone looks spectacular. My amazing photo-shoot with this warm and loving family was a great way to end my day. Happy Sweet 16, Chloe, you guys were great.

    My first Bat Mitzvah of the year turned out to be a spectacular event filled with joy, love, fun, music, and dance.  I first met this family two years ago when I photographed Elysha’s Bat Mitzvah, and it was a pleasure to see them again for Yael’s.  We started out at the house with a pre-mitzvah shoot, just the fam’ having fun.  Then off to Adath Israel for the ceremony, and finally the party led by the always-reliable Bounce Entertainment.  This was a great way to start the year.  Yael, you looked beautiful and charmed the crowd, way to go.  Thanks for having me join this celebration.

    Jackson’s Bar Mitzvah took place over the entire week, starting on Monday with a fantastic and fun rehearsal, the ceremony and luncheon on Thursday morning, and a wicked party on Saturday night. He is a pretty cool kid who knows just how to hang out, kid around, and have fun.  He also comes from a pretty cool and laid-back family.  It was a joy to photograph Jackson and his sister Veronica having just a wildly fun time leading up to the Saturday night, pretty much all just giggles and laughs.  Thanks for having me out guys, Ben and I had a blast.

    I had the pleasure of photographing Jules and his family last weekend, a relationship we have developed that started a few months back before the snow.  I met this amazing family in the park for a pre-mitzvah photoshoot, and finally got to finish everything off at the rehearsal and bar mitzvah party last weekend.

    I really enjoyed photographing this family, Jules and his sister are wonderful, playful, funny, and a joy to engage with. The family has always been warm and inviting and this was obviously evident by the incredible response they received from the guests last weekend at the party. Jules, you were fantastic. I wish you all the success in the future and look forward to seeing you all again.

    Noah’s bar mitzvah party last week was quite different.  We started at Beach Blast for some beach volleyball, and then headed over to Dream Resto Lounge, where Tiffany and Bounce Entertainment raised the roof.  This was a crowd of all ages, and were ready to party hard.  Good job guys, it was a (beach) blast to be there.

    I met Leor and her family just after her Bat Mitzvah for a quick photoshoot at the house.  A cold day but we made the most of it.  She is very sweet, and is quite the athlete at her young age.  We both got to shoot some hoops before the snow that day.  The future is definitely looking up.

    I photographed Dylan’s rehearsal and ceremony / party last week at Adath Israel.  This group of four brothers are all jokes and levity, just as brothers should be.  Dylan is the last on the list to come of age so there was no holding back.  After the ceremony, all seriousness was put aside.  The DJ this night was Q Productions and really rocked the house.  I really liked this party, it had all the props; games aplenty, a mechanical bull dressed like a surf-board for the ‘beach’ theme, card tables, hoops, virtual reality googles, the usual teen vices.  Thanks for having us celebrate with you guys, it was a blast.

    What a great night for a joint 40th birthday party.  Fara and Efrem decided to do it in style by having their joint 40th bday party at the Uptown Loft.  Friends and family were treated to a huge sushi station, 40th birthday ice sculpture and great DJ to keep them going all night long.

    November 23rd was JAM Night at The Uptown Loft. An amazing night of music featuring ‘Eat a Peach‘, an incredible Allman Brothers Tribute Band that combines some of Toronto’s top Jam Band musicians. All ticket proceeds went to Shaare Zedek hospital in Israel. A great night for a great cause.

    I could tell I was in for a good night the minute the family walked in.  Lose, fun and ready to get the party started, there was no holding back from anything….kids and adults alike.  Add to the fact that Mitch, our videographer, was a guest …the photo-booth was popping all night long.  It was great to see the Evan enjoying himself so much.  Thanks for having me photograph you.

    This was one moment of fun after the next, we had an amazing ceremony on Thursday morning and then a fantastic party at the Showroom with David Keystone and the Magen Boys on Saturday.  Adam is one smooth character; joking, laughing, just hamming it up.  This little dude is going places.  The sisters were too in fine form; stunning and ready to party.  I really like this family, it has been a pleasure to hang out with you for the few mitzvah days.  Made my November, it did.

    This was a fantastic bar mitzvah, the entire family was ready to roll from the get go with slick shades and cool duds.  The party was stylish, low key and easy going and featured possibly the best spread of food I have ever had at a bar mitzvah.  Zane’s dad and I go back a few years, we play music together, and it was wonderful to reconnect at this simcha.  Zane was spectacular; stylish and sharp.  Mazel Tov, guys.

    I photographed Leah at home the day after her bat mitzvah.  She’s a wonderfully sweet kid, the second of the three sisters that I have photographed.  The light was fantastic, the family was in a mood to schmooze, and it was such a nice way to spend the morning.  I go back a few years with the family and extended family so it was nice to connect again.  Leah, you looked fantastic, and I know the morning service was amazing.  Mazel Tov.

    This rehearsal photo-shoot was so much fun, it helped me forget the fact that my car had broken down just as I was arriving at the synagogue.  The warmth and kindness of the entire family that was on display during the rehearsal spilled over to after the photo-session when they asked me to join them for shabbat dinner while I waited for the tow truck to arrive. Too kind.  Ori was great and the whole family was very special.  Thanks for having me photograph you all.
