    Sam’s Bar Mitzvah: Feb 24, 2018

Sam’s bar mitzvah rehearsal and party were just one fun day after the other. He’s a great kid with a delightful sister and lovely parents.  We met at Beth Tzedec a few days before for a rehearsal.  The kids were in fine form, joking and having fun.  All the Synagogue’s a Stage’, y’know.  The party turned out to be a beautiful celebration of coming into adulthood. Sam took on the party with enthusiasm and attitude, and Lucas from PURE Entertainment rocked it out well into the night. He is the best!!! Party planner extraordinaire, Vivian Ringwald from 2-Steps-Ahead pulled this together with such grace and style, amazing decor by Natalie Lederman was the icing on the cake.  Mazel tov, guys.

Norah’s Bat Mitzvah was one of the last to take place at the Habonim Synagogue before it get’s a major face-lift.  This was a wonderful simcha.  Norah is such a class act; confident, funny, and had everyone in tears watching her retrospective video courtesy of her dad… oh, those were tears of laughter, not sadness.  Great family, delicious food, a celebration to end all celebrations.  Mazel Tov.

Charly’s bar mitzvah ceremony at Holy Blossom Synagogue was just a joy to behold. These three kids, Charly being the oldest, seem to have their sibling repartee down pat. I’m sure dinner at the Warwick residence is none too laid-back or chilled, these boys play off each other at every moment, and all in good clean fun. The rehearsal was smooth and flawless, and the party was the perfect blend of style and warmth. Great music along with delicious food makes for a special party. Both Ben and I thoroughly enjoyed.

Josh had his bar mitzvah at the Maple Downs Country Club, officiated by Rabbi Erin Polansky who is the perfect mix of charisma and class to officiate over any mitzvah. This is my second outing with this family, and the proverbial brother and sister tag-team action ensued.  Josh looked suave, and it was enjoyable to photograph him alone before joining the family in the clubhouse. You have to just love that entrance hall and wall, how can a photographer go wrong. Thanks guys, a lovely way to spend my morning.

Zoe’s bat mitzvah took place at the Oakdale Golf & Country Club in early February. This is always a spectacular venue to hold a bat mitzvah, the clubhouse is interesting and that piece of art on the wall photographs just beautifully.  Zoe was spectacular, reading the Torah portion with grace and style, she had everyone cheering in the isles once the ceremony was over. The ceremony, officiated by the delightful Arlene Moshe, was followed by a delicious brunch with a spectacular DJ, mesmerizing magician (Fish the Magish), and Photo Booth. Well all good things must finally come to an end, and Jack’s bar mitzvah was one of those good things that closed out my 2017. What a great way to end the year. We had a fantastic three generational rehearsal a few days earlier and then all friends and family gathered for the bar mitzvah ceremony and brunch on the 17th. Jack is just an awesome kid who has now become a man. The synagogue, Beth David Synagogue is such a super-cool space to photograph. It is bright and large an offers ample opportunity for creativity.  Fern Cohen, party planner extraordinaire, tied the luncheon together beautifully. The speeches were funny, the atmosphere was warm, the music was ‘live’, and it was, in a word… amazing. Thanks for such a nice year-end, you guys were great.

Samantha’s bat mitzvah in late December was fantastic. Held at the Richmond Hill Country Club, one of my favourite places to photograph, it was a special day for everyone. Sam is such a warm and friendly young woman, it was a pleasure to photograph her. This family is pretty chilled and likes to have fun; the perfect way to close the year. This was an especially touching event, Samantha was donating her beautiful long hair to children with cancer.  We had an emotional hair cutting ‘ceremony’ before the party was over. Amazing. Cate and David’s b’nai mitzvah party in early December was one of the most fun parties of the year, one that I will reference as an example of a fantastic nights celebration. It all started a few days earlier with a rehearsal at Beth Radom, and followed with festivities at The Avenue on Saturday night.  This was really the perfect way to begin to close my year, one giant Magen Boys affair with two wonderful families; all the fun you can want in one special night.  Both Cate and David were amazing; loved the camera, loved the attention, loved the stage, and appeared to love celebrating together as cousins.  Thanks for having me join you guys.

Jonni Super Photography: 2017 – The Year In Review

Jonni Super Photography: 2017 – The Year In Review

What a year it has been!!

This was a fantastic year, 2017. I returned from Israel in November of 2016, and relaxed through the new year before diving straight into the 2017 wedding and mitzvah season. I ended up filling the year with projects and client sessions and parties and people and families, and of course, weddings and mitzvahs.

This year, I had the honour of photographing over 60 events.  Thank you to all of the wonderful clients who made my job so much fun! In addition to the new clients that I’ve had the honour to photograph this year, it is been such a treat to see past families return with younger siblings who are at mitzvah age. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the kids grow up and change, and seeing them a year or two later is wonderful. I promise to never take for granted the privilege of documenting the special times in these families lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to photograph you all as you grow, marry, and come of age.

So now on to some of the photos, shall we?

This is my favourite part and will hopefully become an annual tradition because it makes me stop, pause, and reflect on all the amazing people that I’ve had the chance to photograph this last year. It’s such a gift to take a step back from this crazy life and see the beauty of the big picture, not just all the little moments that comprise it but the GREAT BIG PICTURE. I don’t see the flyaway hairs or closed eyes, the awkward tween poses and the weird expressions. I just see the beautiful, shining faces looking back into my lens. I see compassion, joy, pride, love, and hope.  It is always an important reminder of why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

The photos here are not necessarily the best or the most perfect or the most memorable, but they were the photos that made me stop and take a second look. Just something in the eyes, or an expression, or a smile that made me choose.  I’ve put together one photo from most every event, enjoy.

    Jake’s Bar Mitzvah: Dec 2, 2017

Jake’s family travelled early and far for this celebration, but in the end it was all worth it.  The days came together beautifully; the ceremony at the Chabad Flamingo Synagogue on Thursday morning and the wild and crazy party at the Pickle Barrel on Saturday night. Jake was in fine form on both occasions, read from the Torah beautifully and “became not just a man, but THE man”. That too was quite evident on Saturday when you held court in front of a wonderful group of his family and friends.  Bounce Entertainment rocked the house and brought everyone to a celebratory high. I photographed Jonah’s bar mitzvah rehearsal at this beautiful synagogue north of Toronto, the Zichron Yisroel Congregation. The blue walls always look fantastic.   It just so happened that e-Zone party a few days later offered up the same  striking blue background, so of course we took it advantage of that wall too. Jonah was in fine form, a bright and polite young man who together with his brother, must give their parents a run for their money, I’m sure the household does not offer a dull moment between these two, with sports and approaching teenage years.  These were two really special nights, thanks for having me photograph you guys.

We had a lovely rehearsal and portrait session at the Beach Hebrew Institute, a nice and quaint little synagogue in Toronto, and then the party at the Hot HousePure Entertainment was the MC and totally brought the roof down on this little restaurant. I loved photographing this family in the park, followed by a rehearsal, and then a few weeks later, the portraits, ceremony, and party.  I got to spend quite a bit of time with them, (ironically I passed their house often to avoid the Eglington / Bathurst  construction mess) … and enjoyed every minute.  Rachel is one little rising star, ready to take on the world, her little sister Erin is just waiting in the wings. Both kids are delightful, playing it up for the camera and enjoying every second.  We headed to the Alexander Muir park before the fall temperature got too cold and had a wonderful session as the fall colours encroached. The rehearsal and ceremony at Beth Tzedec it was a joy, and then finally the Magen Boys party after the ceremony topped off a few weeks of fun.  Rachel, well done!! The 10th annual OneFamily Hike this year was spectacular. We ascended up into the Golan Heights, and my 6th year as the OneFamily photographer took me into ‘uncharted’ territory.  This was our largest hike, almost 90 participants.  It was also the return of ParaTrek, a company that takes disabled hikers to places they would never be able to hike.  The kibbutz this year was host to an amazing group of hikers; we laughed, cried, and came together as one after 5 days on the trail. Mazel Tov to everyone.

Jacob’s bar mitzvah took place on a crisp November morning at the Donalda Club. A perfect opportunity to photograph the fall colours in Toronto, we had a fun time outside, just laughing and having fun. Jacob and his brother are like two peas in a pod, at least in front of the camera. Playing it up and joking around was the order of the day. Once inside, we were more serious, and we settled in for some portraits in the alcove before heading into the ceremony.  The ceremony was warm and inviting, with beautiful guitar played by Tom Bellman to accompany the service. The kids were great, laughing it up for the camera.  We went inside for the rehearsal and finished off the day with some family photos.  I met the family again for a lovely post-ceremony cocktail party on Friday evening. The party room at the synagogue was dressed for success with a travel theme, a fantastic jazz band, and some delicious food.  Aidan was great, enjoying the spotlight for the day with his family and friends.  Mazel Tov!!

    Maya’s Bat Mitzvah: November 4, 2017

Jonni: Maya’s bat mitzvah rehearsal and party were fantastic, she’s a lovely young woman and together with her sister, we just had a great time. Photographing in the Adath Israel is always spectacular, so rich in colour and history.

Ben: Sometimes you show up at an event and you just get the sense that “I should really strap in for this one…..I have a feeling its gonna be a wild one”!!  Well when you’re shooting a gig at the Magen Boys new event space The Showroom, hometown advantage rules fully apply.  They have every tool at their disposal to throw down a crazy party….and this was no exception!  The Castle crew was all regal and class during the portrait shoot but didn’t hold back once the party started.  Mom led the charge as she kicked off her heels, and she and her crew gave the young party goers a run for their money; killer dance moves and all.

    Tal’s Bar Mitzvah Rehearsal: Nov 2, 2017

Tal’s bar mitzvah rehearsal took place at the beautiful Pride of Israel Synagogue. This was my first time at this synagogue and it was quite a special place to shoot. I loved the portraits down the aisle.  Tal was in good spirits, a little nervous but that would clear up in a day, just in time for the Saturday main event I’m sure.  The whole family was up for some photo fun, and we had a great time. Thanks for having me photograph you guys, mazal tov.

This was a fantastic morning spent at Caleb & Rowan’s house celebrating and photographing their B’nai Mitzvah. What a lovely family, we had a great time shooting some portraits before joining Moshe for the service. Moshe is the cantor for the Beach Synagogue and officiates a wonderful all-inclusive ceremony… and he is just an all-around nice guy. The kids were great, performed well, and entered manhood in style. Of course lunch would have to be delicious and it was.  Thanks for having me out.  Take care guys.

    Isabel’s Bat Mitzvah: Oct 29, 2017

This was one amazing party at the Eglinton Grand on a beautiful Sunday evening in October. I’ve known Isabel’s dad for many years now through music and such, but it was really great to get to know the family this time around. The Eglinton is a special place to have a party; a huge room with fantastic character and flair, and the Magen Boys rocking the house.  The Eglinton also gave us opportunity to shoot on the street, which adds something unique to the night.  Isabel is quite a character; confident and good humoured.  We had a wonderful rehearsal at Beth Sholom just as we did the party… and this party was a special one for me as some of my friends were there too.  Thanks for having me photograph you guys, looking forward to the next one.

Right from the get go I could tell this was not going to be your average 3 day family photo shoot.  With an off the wall father, fantastic bar mitzvah boy, amazing brother and sister, and a mom that holds the entire thing together, the Goldberg’s could really have a TV show to call their own.  The 3 day shoot included the rehearsal and ceremony at Temple Sinai, and party with the Magen Boys at the infamous E-Zone.  By the end of it all, I felt like I was part of the family.  I must admit, it felt a little weird that I wasn’t going to be seeing them again the next day.  High energy from day one till the end; laughs, smiles and good times had by all.  Thanks for letting me be part of the family, if only for 3 days.

Sometimes a clients attention to detail can be tricky when photographing an event, however in this case, Seth’s mom was an absolute artist and a pleasure to work with.  The entire family was cool, laid back, and up for any combination of photos I wanted to try.  Rehearsal and ceremony were officiated by the wonderful Rabbi Yossi Sapirman, at the Beth Torah which has quickly risen to the top of my list of amazing places to shoot.  Its a fantastic venue with beautiful lighting and even better people to work with.  The post-ceremony luncheon was adorned with amazing details and one of the most spectacular buffets I have ever photographed, eventually enjoyed by all.  Thanks for having me join the party.

It wasn’t until I saw the grandfather of the Bar Mitzvah boy sit down at the piano to rehearse just before the ceremony that I realized this family had been life long friends with my family growing up.  I had already had such a fantastic time with them during the rehearsal shoot that the family connection made the night that much more fun.  The party took place at the Faculty Club at U of T.  It’s a venue I had never photographed at before but the room impressed me as I walked through the front door.  The old school feel of the space ended up being a perfect match for the new school energy of the party goers.  A fantastic time was had by all as everybody partied into the night with huge smiles on their faces.  So much fun!!!

    Adam’s Bar Mitzvah: October 7 & 8, 2017

Adam’s Bar Mitzvah took place at the stunning Maple Downs Country Club in Richmond Hill. The rehearsal the day before was beautiful and the ceremony on the Sunday even more spectacular. You can’t go wrong photographing at this venue; green everywhere in early October. I’ve known Adam’s parents for 20 years and it was great to reconnect with them. Sunday started with Adam and me walking around the club, photographing and having fun, before we eventually met up with the family and headed into the ceremony; Adam was fantastic, enough said.  The tennis themed lunch was delicious, the amazing Kenny Munshaw holding down the musical end, and everything tied together beautifully by Karen Garscadden from Karen G Events.  So good to see you guys after so many years, definitely looking forward to the next one.
