Zach’s Bar Mitzvah: October 15, 2026
I’m back at Adath Israel, my home away from home, for Zachary’s Bar Mitzvah this morning. Bright and early. Well, early anyway, eight o’clock in the morning in late October isn’t exactly bright, but early? Very yes. I met up with Zachary for a little photo adventure before the ceremony, and he was right on the money. We headed outside into what I shall politely describe as refreshing weather, wandering around the synagogue and finding some great spots to photograph this lovely young man. He was a trooper, despite the temperature! Once we’d done our rounds, we headed back inside, thawed out a little and picked up the rest of the family. Mom, Dad and sister joined us for another walkabout and some family photo fun. By then, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles had started arriving, so naturally we rounded up the troops and got everyone into the picture. A little organized chaos, as always, but we got there. Then it was off to the small sanctuary, where Rabbi Adam and Cantor Alex were about to hold court on this fine morning. Zachary was fantastic. He read beautifully from the Torah, made everyone proud and handled the whole thing like a seasoned pro. Of course, there was the ubiquitous candy toss, because what’s a Bar Mitzvah without a few flying sweets? And then, brunch! Adath Israel knows how to put on a good spread, and today was certainly no exception. Fantastic food, plenty of games for the kids, happy families and a whole lot of celebrating. A short speech (everyone likes a short speech) and we were off to the races. I continued wandering around, photographing kids being kids, adults being adults and everyone generally having a great time. Eventually, after a delicious lunch and plenty of photos, we called it a day. Another lovely morning with a terrific family and a wonderful young man. Way to go, Zachary! Mazel tov, guys!
